Used to Study in Curtin 5 yrs ago. I have to agree best pl to be getting gals will be the student hseing as well as tav.
It easy to impress those 18-21 yrs old gals esp those u have just graduated from JC or poly(talking abt sg gals here or any those in the same category).
They are impressionable and its their first time being out of the country without their strict parents.

For those who are working, try joining some clubs/hobbies. Join something that interest you like yoga or pilates classes. But make sure u join these clubs coz u have interest in them not for the sole purpose of picking up gals.
But usually from there u will meet uni students or young working adults.
From there is all up to you.

With the Aussie gals I notice if you willing to open your mouth n start a conversation they will talk to you. They just love to talk.
