I would like to say that it is not worth making the trip to CP just for the hobby. If you have to be there for work, or visiting friends maybe, but not for the hobby. I say this being someone who has been going regularly since 2001, and even have my own condo there.
Yes there is still action to be found, but no it is definitely not worth the time or money spent when there are many other places to go.
I know the popular places have migrated to Zhuhai, or huizhou, but you might want to consider some of the older spots like hengli, Shillong, chaotou, or even qingzhou.
