Hi xxxx4. The kitchen, shower and toilet are separated from the main part of the house for hygiene and ventilation purposes. For the kitchen it is also just in case of accidental fire, the fire would be less likely to spread to other parts of the house. The kitchen, shower and toilet are usually on a lower level of the house too. Just my guesses. Although we in industrialised Singapore think it is odd. I have never visited Vietnam.
many vnmese like to buy things/upgrade their house unnecessarily so long as they can show off they are superior than their neighbour. bro singviet, am i right to say that?
Sometimes, they have a real reason why they need to upgrade, but often, it's more to show off to fellow villagers. For example, my useless SIL, by hook or by crook, she borrowed so much money to build a City standard house in the village. Looks nice and modern, totally different from the houses there. Got bath tub ( don't know for what ), got air con etc. But she owed so much money. The house is surely for show off.

seriously i think they care very much about their "face"...
but the worst thing i think is they like to laugh/look down on ppl whom they think is inferior to them...

That is the time you should keep your wife away from her house. All those relatives of hers will think that she is loaded because she has a foreigner husband. I have heard of so many Viet spouse running debts of a few thousand USD during the TET period because of gambling. They will tell you its just 10K VND or 20K VND per session, but they gamble thru out the night. Before you know it, its 5k USD gone.
In order for your G/F to work here ... Chances Equal 0 .. Cannot Speak n Understand English ... Cannot understand Chinese ... No Diploma or Degree ... Don't even qualified for The lowest category of Work Permit ...
Most of the gals works here fall under the following category :

FACE is very impt to Vietnamese. Let me cite an example, not too long ago, my MIL was looking for a wife for my youngest BIL. The gal's family choose my BIL because they know my wife married me (a foreigner) and also my wife's eldest sister is in the USA. To add on, this youngest BIL will inherit all the land that my MIL. has (vietnamese pass all their fortune to their YOUNGEST son, not oldest) On the day of wedding, you will think that my MIL is damm loaded. The amount of money she spent is crazy for a province wedding. The gold + cash + gift etc. At that time, i told my wife `your mother is SUPPOSED to be POOR... but judging from how she spends on this wedding, you think she is POOR?' after that, i found out that my MIL spent nearly US$20K on the wedding, all these for the sake of FACE. After the wedding, my MIL started to tell my wife she's BROKE, she's POOR etc etc. Even my wife doesn't believe her now. My earlier example of my SIL building the modern house in the village is another example. Bathtub and aircon for what? She has money to pay for electricity? forget it, all these for the sake of FACE.

YEah .. I heard that too ... after that they sell their land and pay the debts ... and than debts after debts .. sighzzz ...
Luckily her family circles and neighbours are NOT Big time gamblers ...
WE always gathered to play numbers lotto and is 1k per card to passs some time ... after a period we stopped ..

Why not ask them to buy a spoilt airconditioner or just the shell of it and front panel of the airconditioner. Install it in their houses and they do not need to turn it on? Buy a TV that is spoilt? Buy fake branded clothes/watches/wallets?

How do people get to see the aircon? They have to come into the house or room ma... so at the same time, what do you think the possibility of on-ing the aircond will be? Got what you mean... but.....its their culture
