Man allegedly slapped and punched woman before robbing her

SINGAPORE - He is said to have tailed his victim as she walked home along Sophia Road in the wee hours of Tuesday (June 7) morning before making his move.

The 38-year-old man then allegedly slapped and punched his victim, a 21-year-old woman, before making off with her bag, said the police in a statement.

The incident, which took place at about 2.55am eventually led to the suspect's arrest. This was after a member of the public heard the victim's cries for help, gave chase and detained the man.

The police, who arrived shortly after, arrested the man and returned the victim's belongings to her.

Man tries to rape step-niece, 4, while her mum is in kitchen

The mother of his step-niece treated him like her own brother.

He repaid her kindness by trying to rape her four-year-old daughter in the living room of their home in February 2012 while her mother was just metres away in the kitchen.

The man, now 22, pleaded guilty in court yesterday to one count of attempted rape.

Another charge for the attempted rape of his then 13-year-old girlfriend committed that month will be taken into consideration during sentencing.

The man, who has worked as a mover and a hospital porter, cannot be named to protect his victims' identities.

He is represented by lawyer Daniel Soo.

Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) Kavita Uthrapathy said the man's mother married the little girl's maternal grandfather in July 2011 and they lived in a two-room flat in the west.

After his mother died five months later, his stepfather allowed the man and his brother to continue living with him as he considered them as his own sons.

Singapore now the 18th most expensive city in the world for expats: Survey

SINGAPORE - Many Singaporeans often lament about the rising cost of living here, but it appears that expatriates in the city-state may be feeling the pinch as well.

According to a new survey released on Wednesday (June 8) by consultancy firm ECA International, Singapore is now the 18th most expensive city in the world for expats, up from 31st from five years ago.

ECA International's cost of living survey are carried out twice a year, and uses a basket of day-to-day goods and services commonly purchased by expats, including food, household and recreational goods, leisure services as well as general expenses on items like clothing, electrical goods, alcohol and tobacco.

Living costs such as accommodation rental, utilities, car purchases and school fees were not included, as they are usually compensated for in expat packages.

Mrs Jacelyn Wong, who works at the SK Jewellery shop in Clementi Mall, stopped a woman in her 50s from being cheated of $4,000 in a phone scam.

The woman in her 50s looked fearful as she entered the SK Jewellery shop in Clementi Mall, asking to buy plenty of gold jewellery.

Mrs Jacelyn Wong, 23, a customer service executive, thought it was odd.

She told The New Paper yesterday: "The lady didn't mention much. She just took out all of her credit cards, asking us to swipe the maximum amount for each credit card.

"When asked, she just said she wanted to sell off all the gold for cash."

Mrs Wong felt something was wrong. So she asked the customer why she needed such a large sum of money.

The woman, who had walked into the shop with earpiece plugged in, told Mrs Wong to be quiet, and proceeded to buy $4,000 worth of jewellery.

But she eventually confided in Mrs Wong, who kept asking her if everything was okay.

According to her, the person on the other end of the phone line wanted her to transfer money overseas. The man claimed to be a police officer from the "Shanghai Police Division" and demanded an administrative fee, saying he had a parcel under the woman's name which contained illegal items.

Mrs Wong asked the woman if she truly had a parcel in shipping and the woman said no.

Sensing it was probably a scam, Mrs Wong persuaded the woman to make a police report and even accompanied her to the Clementi Neighbourhood Police Post to do so.

INTERVENTION

Mrs Wong said: "I have been reading a lot about parcel scams on Facebook, so I was aware of it. I knew that something was wrong."

The incident happened on May 29. Thanks to Mrs Wong's intervention, the woman did not transfer any money to the scammer.

She also did not ask for a refund from SK Jewellery, saying she will wait for the price of gold to rise before she sells off the gold jewellery she had bought.

"She was very fearful and kept saying 'I don't know', when I questioned her. Her emotions probably affected her judgment," said Mrs Wong.

To thank Mrs Wong and her colleagues at SK Jewellery for helping her, the woman bought them egg tarts after making the police report.

Woman fractures spine after Bukit Panjang lift shoots up and down several floors

SINGAPORE - A woman fractured her spine in yet another lift accident at an HDB block in Bukit Panjang on Tuesday (June 7), Channel NewsAsia reported.

The news agency quoted the 59-year-old victim's daughter Tracy Goh as saying that "when the lift reached the first storey, it shot up to the 11th, down to the third and back up to the 12th".


Ms Goh added that her mother, known only as Mdm Yeo, grabbed the railing but still fractured her spine because of the strong impact. Also, there was a gap between the lift and the floor which made it hard for rescuers to save Mdm Yeo afterwards.

Mdm Yeo, a part-time cleaner, was taken to Ng Teng Fong General Hospital and was warded overnight for observation. She declined to be interviewed but her daughter said she was told to return for follow-ups and physiotherapy sessions.

According to Channel NewsAsia, Holland-Bukit Panjang Town Council has been issued with a notice to suspend the operation of the lift at Block 150 Petir Road, and to appoint an authorised examiner to conduct an investigation to determine the cause of the incident.
