Re: Tottenham Hotspur - the Pride of London

A brief history of Tottenham Hotspur:

Formed: 1882
Previous names: Hotspur FC
Admitted to Football League: 1908
UEFA Cup 1971-1972 ,1983-84
European Cup Winners' Cup: 1962-63
First Division: 2
Second Division: 2
FA Cup: 8
League Cup: 4

Tottenham Hotspur's position as one of the glory teams of British football was cemented in 1961, when they became the first English team to do the Double in 20th century. That was one of two championships the club has won, but they have added 15 major cups to their collection - including, in 1963, the first European trophy won by an English club.

At first the club was called Hotspur, having been formed in 1888 by a group of grammar-school boys. They were not elected to the Football League until 1909, but by then Spurs had already won their first FA Cup. In 1901 they beat Sheffield United in the final, thus becoming the only non-league side to win the tournament after the formation of the Football League.

Tottenham were relegated immediately after the war, but returned to the top flight at the first attempt and then won the FA Cup in 1921. After finishing runners up in the league the following season, Spurs slipped down the table; they were relegated again in 1928 and also - after a brief, two-season return to the top flight - in 1935.

After the war, under the progressive management of Arthur Rowe, Spurs become one of the most attractive sides in England. They were promoted in 1950 and won the club's first championship in spectacular style a year later. After finishing as runners up in 1952 and 1957, a third title was won under Bill Nicholson in 1961 - and this time Spurs added the FA Cup.

To Nicholson, glory was as important as victory. His Spurs side combined the two: in that Double season they romped to the title by eight points, scoring 115 goals in 42 games, and their 11 consecutive league wins at the start of the season is still an English top-division record. Their team included the great Danny Blanchflower and Dave Mackay, and in the summer of 1961 they added the supernatural goalscoring talent of Jimmy Greaves, whose 266 goals over the next nine years remain a club record.

Although Spurs were almost omnipresent in the top six in Greaves' time, they steadily became known as a cup side. In 1963 they thrashed Atletico Madrid win the Cup Winners Cup, and in 1972 they would become the first winners of the renamed Uefa Cup, beating Wolves over two legs in the first all-English European final.

There were also triumphs in the FA Cup (1962 and 1966) and League Cup (1971 and 1973), but rioting after a defeat to Feyenoord in the 1974 Uefa Cup final led to Nicholson's resignation. A hideous few years followed, including a year in Division Two after a shock relegation in 1977.

The man who took Spurs down, Keith Burkinshaw, revitalised the club and oversaw another productive spell at the start of the Eighties. In 1978 he pulled off an almighty coup by signing the World Cup-winning duo of Ossie Ardiles and Ricky Villa, adding them to a midfield that already contained the sublime talent of Glenn Hoddle.

Spurs triumphed in the FA Cup in 1981 - when Villa's amazing solo goal beat Manchester City in a replay - and 1982; then, in Burkinshaw's final game in 1984, they won the Uefa Cup at White Hart Lane after beating Anderlecht on penalties.

There were third-placed finishes in 1985, 1987 and 1990, but the next trophy came in 1991, the fifth consecutive decade in which Spurs had won a trophy when the year ended in 1. Paul Gascoigne took Spurs almost single-handedly to the final against Nottingham Forest, but injured himself and was stretchered off. His team-mates recovered marvellously from that, and going a goal down, to win 2-1.

Much of the Nineties was spent grimacing at Arsenal's success, although 1999 was a successful year: Spurs beat Leicester to win the League Cup and David Ginola was named Player of the Year.

They won the League Cup again in 2008, but the thing Spurs really wanted - Champions League football - finally came their way when, in Harry Redknapp's first season, they became the first side in five years to break into English football's Big Four. Almost fifty years on from their last visit, Spurs were back in European football's premier competition, but an impressive campaign could not be repeated the following season.

Bro,

What say you?
Is it going to be an five or more consecutives decades of trophies when the year ended with 1?
Hopefully, it will be more than winning trophies in the coming years ending with 1.
Hopefully, it will be at least a trophy per year starting with 2011...

great intro for our beloved club bro. ricardo rocked!

bro the game ended with 1, but 2-1 lah.
when watching the match with one eye lost to sleep, i lost count of how many stoke fouls that escaped the referee's attention. the shots from kaboul and defoe blocked by stoke elbows in the penalty box are the ones i can still remember.

oh yes and a stoke player actually pulled down kaboul as he was rising to head a wonderful cross during a corner.

Matthew Etherington struck a brace as Stoke ended Tottenham's 11-game unbeaten run. Two first-half goals proved enough to deny ten-man Spurs, despite an Emmanuel Adebayor penalty

Bro,

I suspected the lost is coming, but it is sooner than expected. With Chelski resurrgent, Arsenal and Liverpool firing, Spurs must really make chances count and not wait for the referee to give them a free ride.

I am saying this because I feel that there will be decisions going against us and there are decisions going for us earlier, like against Liverpool. We cry foul and lost our heads by not converting enough good chances. Great teams like Barcelona and Real Madrid just convert, convert and convert their chances instead of letting the referee gets them down. We need to have this winner mentality that we can contain, overcome, overtake and outscore any opponents that we face.

Hopefully, we piclk up from there.

Bro,

I don't follow Italian football, so not too sure about Amauri.

However, I do think that fresh blood needed to boost Spurs and by saying so, I look at Kyle Walker as an example. We loan him out and he developed into quite an attacking wing back. Chelski and Man U have great example too, Daniel Sturridge and Danny Welbeck respectively. Both did well during their loan period and managed to secure 1st team place with their consistent performance. This is where Spurs youth ranks should do.

Hopefully, we can have a stream of great youth coming through.

Re: Tottenham Hotspur - the Pride of London

Spurs got knocked out of UEL despite winning 4-0 against Shamrock:
http://soccernet.espn.go.com/report?id=332151&cc=4716

Good to see that our fringe players helped the team to bounce back from the Stoke defeat. Now UEL out of the way, not that I am especially happy as it means we have 1 less chance for a trophy, it is time to concentrate on EPL and FA Cup.

Harry, you have not much chance to rotate your players and keep your fringe players happy enough.

Harry, you have to win at least a trophy for Spurs before you could think about being England's manager. Becoz you are at a top club without a trophy, that will not help if you become England manager.

Harry, you have to push us into UCL next season. If you can win the EPL, it will be great for your portfolio, if not, qualifying for UCL is the least you can do with Spurs at the current position with such a talented squad, which you mentioned time and again.

COMON YOU HARRY!!!

Chelski draw with Wigan:
http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/st...o-mire?cc=4716

Surprise result... Didn't expect Chelski to slip again.

Hopefully, Spurs can make sure we capitalise on this slip up and regain 3rd bearing in mind that next week it is us against Chelski.

Re: Tottenham Hotspur - the Pride of London

Pavy does it again:
http://soccernet.espn.go.com/report?id=318043&cc=4716

With Bale injured and Lennon suffering an injury in the 1st half, we did look too narrow in attack. Our wingbacks are not crossing well enough until VDV turn up in the 2nd half with loads and loads of creativity.

I think we should use the wingbacks against Chelski in our next match at WHL. Given a choice, I will keep Bale in the sideline even if he recovers from his sprain ankle.

Play 3 Fullbacks (Kaboul, Gallas & King) with Sandro covering them infront. Kaboul has the speed to cover Gallas and King, while they can provide the necessary experience. Sandro played really well yesterday as a covering midfielder and he switches play with Parker very well. 1 will stay back as cover while the other attack. Sandro's play has mature tremendously during this match.

Parker and Modric in midfield with the 2 wingbacks (Walker & Assou-Ekotto). Bale to be introduced when things get too tight as Chelski has a very good midfield as well as wings. Bale can also be introduced when VDV is getting over-crowded and tired. Introduction of Bale at a later stage will prove crucial as Bale will run against tired legs.

VDV just behind the 2 strikers (Adebayor & Defoe). Playing Defoe will give Terry and his defence a lot running and this will wear them down until the introduction of Bale. Adebayor will provide the necessary running, trickery as well as height for attack. VDV will be stringing the wingbacks as well as Modric/Parker into attacking positions. If there is a need to change the strikers, Pavy will come in for Defoe after Bale's introduction as this will provide additional height and shooting options outside the box. VDV and Modric can often switch positions to make this diamond formation more fluid.

Jake Livermore and/or Bassong will become the necessary substitutes for defence and midfield.

Just my 2 cents worth diamond formation against Chelski.

With Chelski's consistency in question. I think we are in for a good match against Chelski. Let's hope that this match is going to be the start of the turn around for future matches against Chelski.

pavy for spurs!

honestly sunderland did a great job trying to contain the magical spells oozing from vdv and modric in the attacking third, but pavy is not to be denied.

lets hope chelski have "faith" in and keep their new manager till end of the season, one less top 4 contender...

Tottenham moved in to third place in the Premier League after returning to winning ways with a narrow 1-0 win over Sunderland at White Hart Lane.

2003–2006 Chievo app 90 (goals 17)

2011- Parma (loan) app 11 (goals 7)

kyle walker has been very lively and not shy of taking shots, i hope he turns out well along his spurs career.

No denial that Sunderland played well. However, I think we do look narrow when Lennon is replaced.

Bro,

AVB is a young and potentially good manager. This Chelski team is basically Mourinho's team. Most players are bought during his era. AVB needs to change the team, but I think it will take a little bit of time.

Look at Spurs, it took us about 3 seasons to build up till where we are now. Of course, Chelski got different $$$ power unless you are willing to help out with your billions...
