Prison officer jailed for cheating
Published 6 hours ago Amir Hussain A senior prison officer has been jailed for 10 months for conspiring with 10 others to cheat the government agency that helps ensure public funds are spent properly. Chew Tee Seng, a deputy superintendent of prisons, was involved in submitting 126 forged documents to the Auditor-General's Office (AGO) during its audit of the Singapore Prison Service (SPS) for the financial year 2010. The aim was to cover up previous forged documents. It is unclear how much public funds were lost. However, the amounts in the 126 fake documents totalled $2.8 million, so Chew's crimes involved a large sum, the prosecution said. Chew pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing to 20 out of 126 charges of using forged documents. He was sentenced on Tuesday and is out on $50,000 bail, pending an appeal. Chew was manager of the prisons' Infrastructure Development Branch. The 11 accused, from four organisations including the SPS, submitted the fake documents to cover up the prison service's and Thong Huat Brothers' failure to comply with government procurement procedures. continue reading here : http://www.straitstimes.com/singapor...d-for-cheating

Bryon Loke Thong Ler was charged in court with using criminal force on teenage blogger Amos Yee. Published 4 hours ago Elena Chong Court Correspondent SINGAPORE - A 19-year-old was charged in court on Thursday (Aug 18) with using criminal force on teenage blogger Amos Yee at Jurong Point mall. Bryon Loke Thong Ler is alleged to have held on to the 17-year-old's hands and used his arms to restrain him from the back at basement 1 of the mall at Jurong West Central 2 between noon and 12.30pm on May 29. A video of the incident was posted on YouTube by Amos, who was heard repeatedly shouting "Help me!" in the video. Loke, who was unrepresented, told the court that he wished to engage counsel. A pre-trial conference will be held on Sept 6. This is the second time that Amos has been attacked. In May last year, a 49-year-old businessman was jailed for three weeks for slapping Amos when the teen was walking to the State Courts for a pre-trial conference on April 30 the same year. The father of three had wanted to teach Amos a "lesson''. continue reading here : http://www.straitstimes.com/singapor...point-shopping

Teenage blogger Amos Yee back on trial on eight charges
Teen blogger Amos Yee, arrives at the State Courts claimed trial to eight charges with a deliberate intent to wound religious or racial feelings, and for not showing up at a police station. Published 4 hours ago Amir Hussain SINGAPORE - Teenage blogger Amos Yee's trial resumed again on Thursday (Aug 18). The case went for a Criminal Case Resolution (CCR) process earlier in the morning, before being sent back for hearing. On Wednesday (Aug 17), Yee, 17, who does not have a lawyer, had opted to contest all of his eight charges. He had also said he wanted to cross-examine the prosecution's witnesses. But shortly after entering his plea, and before the first witness was called, he told District Judge Lim Tse Haw that he was considering pleading guilty and wanted to attend a CCR. The judge then fixed the case for a CCR, which provides a neutral forum, facilitated by a senior judge, for parties to consider early resolution of criminal cases. It aims to save resources by reducing the chances of an accused person pleading guilty on the day of the trial or once it has started. But with no resolution achieved, the hearing then continued later on Thursday morning. Yee faces six charges of intending to wound the feelings of Muslims or Christians and two of failing to report to the Jurong Police Division for investigations. The alleged crimes were committed between November last year and May this year. Yee is said to have posted one photo and five offensive videos, some of which show him insulting the Bible and Quran. continue reading here : http://www.straitstimes.com/singapor...-eight-charges

Pokemon Go players at Yishun Park leave behind 70 bags of trash a night, say cleaners
Published 11 hours ago David Sun SINGAPORE (THE NEW PAPER) - It has started at least one fight between two adults, reportedly caused one driver to crash, and created a traffic hazard because players suddenly dash across roads. Pokemon Go, a location-based augmented reality game where players catch, battle and train virtual creatures on their mobile devices, has now been blamed for another problem: Rubbish. Loads of it. At Yishun Park, the rubbish was left behind by some 400 players who gather nightly at the popular site, known for its many PokeStops, where the creatures spawn. By cleaner Affendi Sohor’s reckoning, the rubbish fills 70 big bags every night. Since the weekend, that is how much he and two fellow cleaners have collected each night from 10pm to 5am. “We were told to install four new bins next to the existing ones because of this Pokemon thing,” he told The New Paper on Tuesday night. continue reading here : http://www.straitstimes.com/singapor...t-say-cleaners

More police patrols in Hougang's Pokemon Go hot spot
Published Aug 20, 2016, 5:00 am SGT Hougang Avenue 10 residents complain of players blocking roads, shouting and littering Felicia Choo The Pokemon Go craze in Hougang has prompted police to step up patrols there "to monitor the situation for any law and order concerns". The police have also put up advisories at the Pokemon hot spot in Hougang Avenue 10, urging players to practise road safety, not to trespass on private property and not to litter, they told The Straits Times. Since the game's launch in Singapore on Aug 6, crowds have gathered daily at the Hougang hot spot, mainly at the amphitheatre and playground between Blocks 401 and 415, a strategic place for catching the game's virtual monsters. This has left residents fuming as some players hog parking spaces for residents or park illegally, blocking the roads. Some of the residents have complained of having their sleep disrupted by the shouting and screaming that continue into the wee hours of the night. continue reading here : http://www.straitstimes.com/singapor...on-go-hot-spot

Thailand rejects request to extradite Holland Village bank robbery suspect
PublishedAug 20, 2016, 5:00 am SGT Thai Attorney-General's Office says it is 'not in the position to consider' request to send Canadian to S'pore Tan Hui Yee Thailand Correspondent In Bangkok Singapore's efforts to extradite a suspect in the Holland Village bank heist have hit a snag in Thailand. The Attorney-General's Office in Bangkok has rejected its request for Canadian national David James Roach. "We denied it because we are not in the position to consider it," said Mr Amnat Chotchai, director-general of the international affairs department at the Attorney General's Office. He did not elaborate on the reasons. Roach, 27, is accused of robbing the Holland Village branch of Standard Chartered Bank on July 7, by allegedly handing the teller a note which said he had a weapon. He flew from Singapore to Bangkok on the day of the robbery, but was detained by Thai police three days later. The Thai authorities revoked his right to stay here, and he has been held at Bangkok's immigration detention centre since then. It is unclear if there are other avenues that would allow Roach to be flown from Bangkok to Singapore to face trial. The two countries have not signed an extradition treaty. continue reading here : http://www.straitstimes.com/asia/se-...obbery-suspect
