Re: Vietnam - HCM

Saw a new in asiaone.....make me wanted to marry..

Jan 30, 2005
1,000 women wanted to marry him

This was so even though technician weighs 180kg, has no car or apartment

IN SINGAPORE, lighting technician Jackson Lee couldn't get a lunch date with a girl, let alone marry one. In Vietnam, the 35-year-old was king.

When he went on a matchmaking tour to Ho Chi Minh City last January, 1,000 young, single, virgin Vietnamese girls were dying to marry him.

It didn't matter that he weighed 180kg, had no car and lived with his parents. He just had to choose.

Faced with the prospect of appraising a queue of 1,000 women, Mr Lee chose the first in line - doe-eyed Nguyen Thi Kum Ngan, 20, who weighed 43kg.

Don't ask him if he felt good having 1,000 women want him.

'I'm not a 'chee ko pek',' he says, using the Hokkien term for dirty old man.

'Those men choose like they're browsing a catalogue. People say I paid money to go to Vietnam to buy a wife.

But I don't think like that. I think two people have to have a connection, a destiny, to be together.'

Mr Lee took all of 10 minutes to decide Ms Kum Ngan was The One - a record at Mr Cupid International Matchmakers, the agency that arranged the tour.

It could have been even quicker, but Mr Lee asked Ms Kum Ngan to remove her make-up. p> 'I didn't want to get a shock.'

Ms Kum Ngan was equally sure, though her reasoning was different. In halting Mandarin, she said: 'I didn't want to marry a Vietnamese man because they gamble, smoke, drink and beat their wives.'

Mr Lee had almost given up finding a wife.

'Too fat. No money. No car. But mostly because I'm too fat,' he said. 'They will never stand the humiliation of going out with me and being stared at.'

Mr Lee, who earns $1,700 a month working on projects such as countdown parties and the National Day Parade, has been happily married for a year now. The couple is expecting a daughter in March.

'Some of my friends doubted I could father a child because I'm so fat,' said Mr Lee, unconsciously reaching out protectively to his wife's swollen belly. 'Some even wonder whether I can have sex.'

By a happy coincidence, Ms Kum Ngan's elder twin sister Minh Huei lives not far away. Two days after Ms Kum Ngan met Mr Lee, her sister was chosen by another Singaporean on a matchmaking tour.

Mr Lee lives with his wife in Tiong Bahru at his brother's place, together with his parents and another sister. They are saving up to buy a three-room resale flat to raise their family. Ms Minh Huei lives with her husband in Toa Payoh.

The twins spend their days doing household chores, shopping at neighbourhood malls and watching VCDs. Sometimes, they steam crabs and cook hometown food.

Ms Kum Ngan said her marriage is happy and she is grateful to have left a hard life in Vietnam.

Not only are the rice farmers' daughters comfortable, but their marriages have made life much better at the family home in Soc Trang, southern Vietnam too. Their dowries paid for electricity, a television set, refrigerator and a telephone line.

Will the couple have a happy ending?

'I don't know whether she'll leave me in the future. I hope not, but you never know. But I believe in fate and destiny. All I can do is to love her and try to provide for her,' Mr Lee said.

Try this one out, Headline "SINGAPORE DOCTOR MARRIES BEAUTIFUL VIETNAMESE DOCTOR WHILE STATIONED IN VIETNAMESE HOSPTAL"

You think it would be news. Don't think so...huh...

It's all about sensationalising a news story and selling more newspaper. As long as profit is involved, we just can't run away from such articles. Also, maybe the reporter is helping a friend in the 'vietnamese bride' business..

Pham Ngu Lao is quite central. This whole street has a few budget hotels. I stayed in Vien Dong Hotel b4. Nice clean hotel but not girl friendly but u 'scream' a bit then they L L. My ger was with me for 5 days, all she needed to do is pass her ID to the front desk.

You may want to hold your horses....Tiger Airways should announce flights between SIN and HCMC in a week or two.
Should be cheaper than the $283 on offer for "2 to travel".....

Bros,

This is the press release :

Tiger Airways Opens Office in Vietnam

Singapore, 27 January 2005 – . Tiger Airways, Singapore’s low fare airline, announced today that it has opened an office in Hanoi in Vietnam, signaling the start of its second phase expansion to Southeast Asian destinations.

“We are preparing the ground for possible operations to Vietnam by getting the necessary infrastructure in place first. I am convinced that Tiger Airways can give a significant boost to air travel between Singapore and Vietnam if awarded the air traffic rights to Ho Chi Minh City,” said Tony Davis, CEO of Tiger Airways.

As part of its long-term commitment to be a Pan-Asian Low Cost Carrier (LCC), Tiger Airways has already taken delivery of two additional Airbus A320 jets in January 2005, boosting its fleet to four airplanes.

“We have the infrastructure and aircraft seat capacity to service the Singapore – Ho Chi Minh route the moment we are given the go ahead. The introduction of Tiger Airways and low fares on this route will open up the market and result in more passengers flying between the two destinations,

“Currently, only full service carriers service this route with fares ranging from S$221 to S$803 with conditions attached to various fare classes. Tiger Airways can be expected to charge much lower fares as much as 80% lower than existing fares available. With our simple one class fares, we expect consumers to be excited at the new Tiger Airways destination,” added Davis.

Tiger Airways has applied for the air traffic rights to fly to Ho Chi Minh City and is awaiting a decision from the Singapore ATRC (Air Traffic Rights Committee). The ATRC is expected to make a decision next week.

Davis said the Vietnam market would fit perfectly into the LCC business model he has created for Tiger Airways in Asia Pacific. Some of these attributes are:

Simple operation to keep costs as low as possible, where savings are passed on to customers through low fares,
Point to Point operation to avoid costly flight transfer costs, reduces lost and delayed baggage, improves punctuality, allows simple tariff of fares,
High aircraft utilization, operate as many flights as possible on each aircraft, short turns on the ground to reduce unproductive time. Fares are set at levels designed to sell as many seats as possible on every flight,
Utilize secondary or under-served airports with lower operating costs and limit services purchased from airport to only essential services
Single fleet type of Airbus A320 allows savings in crew efficiencies and reduces engineering costs and complexity
Direct sales to customers using the internet, reduces distribution costs and avoids ticket production costs.
Since his arrival Davis has expanded airline operations. On January 15, 2005, Tiger Airways added another daily flight to its existing three daily flights to Bangkok. This followed closely an earlier announcement that the airline is putting another two new Airbus A320 jets into service, thus adding more flights to its Singapore hub for the benefit of travelers. Tiger Airways is already the number one choice for travelers on routes between Singapore and Thailand, with services to Bangkok, Phuket and Hat Yai

Wah... solid lar. Fares can be up to 80% cheaper than the normal fares. So if we say its 80% cheaper than the stated $803.. then the price will be around $160. That's cheap le....
