Owen's hat-trick breaks Wolfsburg's hearts in Champions League

England striker Michael Owen demonstrated his finishing class with a hat-trick on Tuesday to seal Manchester United's 3-1 victory at Wolfsburg to dump the Germans out of the Champions League.

After his first-half header, Owen slid home his second on 83 minutes before producing a superb effort in extra-time to claim his third and secure Sir Alex Ferguson's side top spot in Group B.

"Michael Owen is one of the best strikers in the last third of the field in terms of his movement, his positional play and also in terms of his finishing," insisted Ferguson with Owen set to celebrate his 30th birthday on December 14.

CSKA Moscow's 2-1 win at Besiktas put the Russians through as runners-up at Wolfsburg's expense.

With just one fit first-choice defenders in his squad, Ferguson opted to play a 3-5-2 formation with three centre-backs to cope with Wolfsburg's strikers Edin Dzeko and Grafite and his gamble paid off.

"It was a risk in terms of changing the system and we were concerned about containing Dzeko and Grafite, I thought playing three centre-backs would give us a good chance.

"There was some pressure on Wolfsburg to get the result and that suited us as we could afford to be patient.

"They missed two chances to go ahead in the first-half and we may have had to change things if we had been playing catch up.

"Wolfsburg are a strong team and they had some bad luck tonight."

Bosnia and Herzegovina striker Dzeko, who also scored in the first-leg at Old Trafford which United won last September, equalised for the Germans in the second-half only for Owen to make sure of the three points.

"The Champion's League is over for us," said Dzeko.

"This is a great pity, we could have already decided everything in Moscow, but we missed out chances.

"Unfortunately, we have also not used our second chance here tonight."

United came to Germany missing 14 first-team players and were left with just one fit regular defender as Ferguson opted to leave behind his stars Wayne Rooney, Dimitar Berbatov and Ryan Giggs.

'Flu victim Nemanja Vidic stayed at home along with Gary Neville and Wes Brown, who both suffered injuries in Saturday's 4-0 win at West Ham.

Longer-term absentees Rio Ferdinand, John O'Shea and Jonny Evans, plus Brazilian twins Fabio and Rafael da Silva were all unfit leaving France left-back Patrice Evra as the last first-team defender standing.

Ferguson opted for a back three of Evra, Darren Fletcher and Michael Carrick with South Korean's Ji-Sung Park and Brazilian Anderson on the flanks.

The first significant chance of the first-half fell to Wolfsburg's Italian World Cup-winning defender Andrea Barzagli who headed over on 17 minutes from a corner with the goal at his mercy.

Wolfsburg operated with their hot-shot strikers Edin Dzeko -- who has been linked to a transfer to United -- and Brazil's Grafite up front supported by Wolves' play-maker Zvjezdan Misimovic, who also headed over on 21 minutes.

Welbeck hit the back of the net after a clever pass from Anderson with half an hour played, but the effort was ruled offside.

With half-time United grabbed the opening goal when Nani swung in a cross England striker Michael Owen slipped his marker and headed home on 44 minutes.

But Wolfsburg began the second-half with plenty of fight and when Germany defender Marcel Schaefer whipped in a cross on 55 minutes, Dzeko used his strength in the air to power his header past United goalkeeper Tomasz Kuszczak.

With 20 minutes left Grafite had a golden chance when a quick-ball out of defence from Wolfsburg 'keeper Diego Benaglio was whipped by Misimovic into Grafite's path, but the Brazilian fired wide.

With time running out, United replacement Gabriel Obertan put in a crisp pass which found Owen unmarked and the striker stabbed his shot home on 83 minutes before dribbling half the length of the field to then claim his third.

Wolfsburg crash out as Owen fires

Michael Owen scored a famous hat-trick as Manchester United made light of their injury woes to record a memorable win over German champions Wolfsburg.

A measure of United's achievement was that it represented only a third win in 10 attempts against German opposition in Europe. The fact they did it with over a dozen key men missing made the feat all the more remarkable.

It was Owen's first three-timer since he joined the Old Trafford side in the summer - and his first for anyone since 2005 - and will undoubtedly go down as one of his finest on a night when United had their backs against the wall.

The result confirms a seeding in the knockout round draw a week on Friday which in itself does not guarantee easier opposition but at least ensured Old Trafford will host a second leg rather than a first.

An already complicated qualification picture had become even more murky following confirmation earlier in the day that two CSKA Moscow players had tested positive for banned substances following their meeting with United at Old Trafford last month.

As it left the Russians facing expulsion at a UEFA disciplinary hearing on December 17, it raised the possibility of United having to appeal for their top-spot status, or Wolfsburg begging to maintain interest in the competition until the day before the last round of 16 draw.

Sir Alex Ferguson knew the best way of avoiding such anxiety was to win.

Yet to achieve that would be a monumental feat given he landed in Germany without 14 recognised senior players, including eight defenders.

United had prospered from weakened situations before. But never had they been so badly depleted.

Michael Carrick was handed a sweeper's role, with Darren Fletcher and Patrice Evra flanking the England international as Ferguson abandoned his traditional back four.

As the highly-rated Edin Dzeko was part of Wolfsburg's strikeforce, statisticians were busy spending their pre-match discussions wondering if United were set for a record European defeat.

As it turned out, a repeat of their five goal hammering by Sporting Lisbon in 1964, or even a 4-0 spanking by Barcelona in the early Champions League days when the controversial 'three foreigners' rule handicapped a Red Devils side good enough to have won the domestic double the previous spring, never looked likely.

Zvjezdan Misimovic headed a good chance over and Tomasz Kuszczak made a couple of decent saves to deny Makoto Hasebe.

But with a bit of good fortune, namely when Carrick slid in on Hasebe and appeared to bring the wide-man down inside the area without making contact with the ball, and a lot of perseverance, they survived without conceding a goal.

A scoreless opening period would have been well received by Ferguson. Owen's goal made it a perfect opening 45 minutes.

The former Liverpool star has probably not had the impact hoped for when he joined United in the summer and his hopes of going to the World Cup next summer appear to have receded to non-existent.

But Owen remains a master at finding space. And when Nani drifted over a cross from the left 60 seconds before the break, he had evaded the home defence for long enough to give him time to steer his header into the far corner.

But the job was only half done and Ferguson must have known a Wolfsburg bombardment was coming.

Having attacked mostly down their right - trying to expose the least defensively competent wing-back, Nani - Wolfsburg changed their point of attack, knowing Park Ji-sung was not being protected by an orthodox defender.

Marcel Schafer had already fizzed over one cross from the left that Carrick had smashed clear when he had another go at picking out Dzeko.

The Bosnian was astute enough to get between Carrick and Evra, so when the cross arrived perfectly in the centre of the six-yard box, Dzeko rose unchallenged to send a textbook header flying past Kuszczak.

With over half an hour remaining, it appeared United's defensive heroics would be in vain.

But some sturdy defending kept Wolfsburg at bay and when substitute Gabriel Obertan glided into the home box and drilled a cross to the far post, Owen was waiting to tap home.

The qualification picture was suddenly, for United at any rate, much clearer.

Owen's third, when he streaked through after Wolfsburg had wasted their final chance, merely added a notable footnote.

Boss commends trusted troops

Sir Alex Ferguson paid tribute to his players after his makeshift line-up won impressively in Wolfsburg.

The United boss opted for a back three of Darren Fletcher, Michael Carrick and Patrice Evra, with the latter being the only recognised defender in the starting eleven. Apart from conceding an equaliser to the hosts early in the second half, that trio - and the team at large - held firm to give Michael Owen the platform for a match-winning hat-trick.

The 3-1 win sealed top spot in Champions League Group B for the Reds and vindicated Sir Alex's faith in a new formation.

“It was an experimental system, but the good thing is there was (still) enough quality there," the United manager said.

"You have to trust that the players are good at their job. They are, and they’ve proved it again tonight.

“I thought our control in the first half was very good. It was the same in the second half but our threat towards the end and our speed in the counter attack was very pleasing.”

Sir Alex admitted to having concerns before the match, with so many senior members of his squad - especially defenders - unavailable through injury. The versatility of several players was therefore key to United winning in difficult circumstances.

“The players have applied themselves and that’s important in a game like this," said Sir Alex

"Darren Fletcher, for example, plays all over the place. If you’ve got players like that who can adapt into a different system then it’s never a big problem.

The United boss also paid tribute to Owen's predatory instincts, following his clinical three goals.

“It was a fantastic hat-trick. You know how good he is in that penalty box. He’s on the shoulder, he makes runs across defenders, and his timing with his runs is fantastic. I’m really pleased for him.”

The Reds can now look forward to the last-16 draw on December 18, knowing that the second leg will be at home - a reward for finishing top of the group.

“It doesn’t matter who we play at Old Trafford, we always feel we have a chance," said Sir Alex. "And our away record over the last three years has been fantastic, so hopefully that helps us too.

“I think we’ll have to face a big team at some point, last year we had Inter Milan in the last 16 when they were top of Serie A. You take who you get and you have to trust the quality of your own players and the experience they’ve gathered over the years. They’re young but they’re a good team."

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson hailed the impact of Michael Owen after the striker scored a hat-trick in the Red Devils’ 3-1 win over Wolfsburg in Germany.

An injury-ravaged United secured top spot in Group B in the Champions League with the victory and Owen stole all the plaudits after bagging all three goals for the English champions.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Sir Alex praised the 29-year-old for his contribution, which was his first ever Champions League hat-trick.
“[Owen is] Fantastic – around the penalty box, he’s on the shoulder, he’s making runs across defender, his timing of runs is fantastic,” smiled the United boss.

“I’m really pleased for him, that’s a great one for him.”

The Scot also took time out to praise his team's performance, which featured an unlikely defence consisting of Michael Carrick, Darren Fletcher, Park Ji-Sung and Patrice Evra.

“I think that it was experimental, the system,” explained Ferguson.

“The good thing is that there are players with quality there so you have to trust them, they did their job and they proved it tonight again.

“I thought the control in the first half was very good, I thought the second half the control was not so good but the threat towards the end with the speed on the counter attack was very, very good.”

Three goal hero praises team after Wolfsburg win...

Manchester United striker Michael Owen has revealed his pride at scoring his first hat-trick for the club in the Red Devils’ 3-1 win over Wolfsburg in the Champions League and praised his team-mates for a "great team performance."

The England international grabbed all three goals in the victory, which sees the English champions top their group in the Champions League.

"[It means] a lot, obviously I have scored a few hat-tricks in my time but it’s always nice to score a hat-trick and it capped off a great team performance," he told Sky Sports after the game.

"Me getting the three goals will probably grab the headlines but I thought it was a great team performance."

An injury-ravaged United were forced to field Darren Fletcher and Michael Carrick at the back and Owen admitted helping the defence out had been a priority for the entire team.

"Obviously having so many players out we had to try and protect our back three," explained the striker.

"Europe’s a different type of football to domestic and obviously if you get one chance you have to stick it away and thankfully we nicked one just before half-time."

The win sees the Old Trafford outfit into the knockout stages as group winners and Owen admitted he was hoping for a favourable draw.

"It’s great being top of the league, so we play at home second, I’m not going to lie you, we want as weak a-side as possible," he added.

"Having said that, if a team has got to first or second in the Champions League, there really are no weak sides but you want to avoid the big guns."

Its heart-warming to see an out of luck and out of favor Striker like MO getting a new lease of life and a refreshing turn around in his career.

I have always liked his persona..... a true gentleman, calm, cool headed with good footballing skills. It sadden me when he was rotting away until a year ago, made worse by the fact than no Premiership team even wanted him...

And i was the first to jump for joy when SAF took him into our fold........ coz only SAF with his patience and his experience can shape, guide and put back the broken pieces of a once feared Michael Owen...

VIDIC BOOST ENOUGH FOR FERGUSON

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is ready to welcome Nemanja Vidic back to his starting line-up and would be satisfied if the Serbian was the only man available to ease his injury-ravaged defence.

In total, Ferguson was without 14 senior men for Tuesday night's Champions League encounter with Wolfsburg, eight of them defenders.

Yet the Red Devils made light of the handicap, beating the German champions 3-1 at the Volkswagen Arena thanks to Michael Owen's hat-trick.

Michael Carrick and Darren Fletcher joined Patrice Evra in an unrecognisable three-man defence and the midfielders seem set to remain in post as Wes Brown's hamstring injury is not responding to treatment.

Yet Ferguson is unconcerned about the on-going problems, even though high-flying Aston Villa visit Old Trafford on Saturday.

"I expect Vidic to be fit and if he is available we would have him and Michael Carrick, plus Darren Fletcher and Patrice Evra," he said. "I would be happy enough with that."

Ferguson also expects to have Ryan Giggs, Wayne Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov available to face Martin O'Neill's men, who have once again moved to the fringes of a top-four place.

That might mean a quick relegation back to the substitutes' bench for Owen, who marked a rare start by converting his first Champions League treble since 2003.

Although it might have come too late to allow him to challenge for a spot in Fabio Capello's World Cup squad, it was proof he still retains his old finisher's instinct, with Ferguson admitting Owen has a huge part to play this term.

"It was a fantastic performance. Michael's finishing and positional play were superb," said the United boss.

"I made the point some weeks ago that his training performances have improved steadily. I have had no worries about him.

"Obviously in some games recently we have only played with one striker and Wayne Rooney has been it. Here we used a different system.

"The evidence of a player is always on the football field and Michael has given us that this evening. He has proved his worth and I am delighted with his performance."

It is hard to pick a United player who did not exceed expectations and the fact it was only their third away win in 10 attempts against German opposition indicates just what a milestone it was.

Victory ensures United will face a runner-up in the knock-out phase next spring. But while potential opponents already include AC Milan and Bayern Munich, playing the decisive second leg at Old Trafford should help.

It also means United avoided getting embroiled in what is sure to be a prolonged squabble over the failed drugs tests of two CSKA Moscow players, Alexei Berezutsky and Sergei Ignashevich, following their 3-3 draw with the Red Devils last month.

Although the defensive duo were suspended as CSKA beat Besiktas in Istanbul last night, it is the Russian side who should advance ahead of Wolfsburg.

However, UEFA regulations provide the power for expulsion and a disciplinary hearing is set for December 17 - the day before the last 16 draw - to determine the outcome, with Wolfsburg coach Armin Veh offering a very astute observation.

"This mess will take weeks to sort out," he said.

"It is not a matter for me to comment on but for Uefa and we can only hope they will take the right decision."

Looking just at the list of substitutes for last night's game with the jersey numbers running into the 40s, i would have thought that it was a Carling Cup game and not a Champions League game.
Great game though for Owen, bagging a hat-trick in our United shirt. Hope he scores more (7 and counting) and justify SAF's decision to bring him to OT.

According to The Mirror, 'United are ready to offer Campbell the chance to train with them instead ahead of the transfer window opening on January 1 to asses the veteran's fitness. And United boss Ferguson may then offer Campbell a six-month contract until the end of the season.'

The Sun also reckons that United are 'ready to launch a sensational bid for Campbell' and 'Old Trafford boss Alex Ferguson sees the former England centre-half as the answer to United's defensive problems now he is finally allowed to play again.'

And don't worry, there's still more:

'United are investigating how quickly they can sign Campbell and the signs are he will be fit for his debut for the champions early in the New Year. Campbell could face the Gunners on January 31 and another ex-club, Portsmouth, on February 6.'

Disappointingly, the paper has missed one obvious angle by asserting that Campbell has been 'training by himself' since leaving Notts County. This isn't entirely true. After requesting their help, Campbell has also been training at Arsenal...

yups, for tonite's game against the villans, SAF will likely to deploy a 3-man central defensive partnership of Fletcher, Carrick and Vidic. Vidic to handle the big and robust forwards John Carew or Heskey.

Nemanja Vidic will return to the Manchester United starting line-up on Saturday as the Red Devils injury crisis starts to ease.

Michael Carrick is still going to be required to deputise alongside Vidic at centre-back for the Old Trafford encounter with Aston Villa.

However, with Vidic recovering from a flu virus, Wayne Rooney (hamstring) and Dimitar Berbatov (knee) getting over minor knocks and Ryan Giggs available after being rested, Ferguson does have more options, even if the game comes too early for Fabio Da Silva and Wes Brown (hamstring), who have started training.

Aston Villa central defender James Collins returns to the squad after injury for the trip to Old Trafford.

The former West Ham player has been sidelined for the past month with thigh and groin problems but has now returned to training.

Villa boss Martin O'Neill must decide whether to recall his £5million signing or keep faith with Carlos Cuellar who has impressed in recent weeks alongside Richard Dunne.

O'Neill has no fresh injury worries as Villa look to win at Old Trafford for the first time in 26 years.

PHELAN: LIFE TOUGH FOR BIG FOUR

The loss of an impressive 26-year unbeaten home record over Aston Villa confirmed what Manchester United already knew - the Premier League is more even this year than it has been for a long time.

On a weekend of bizarre results, United losing at Old Trafford to a side once again pushing for a top four berth was perhaps not the most surprising.

But the Red Devils' failure to find an equaliser once Gabriel Agbonlahor had scored against them for the fourth successive season did cost them a share of the Premier League leadership.

Not that anyone at United is getting too downcast, with assistant manager Mike Phelan expecting plenty of points are going to be dropped all round before the main prize is handed out next May.

"The competition is of a higher standard this year," he said.

"There are a lot more good players about and plenty of good teams who are very well organised.

"There is nothing easy and every team will drop points.

"Nobody likes to lose but last week we were five points behind Chelsea, now it is three, so in that respect we are a little bit better off."

At least United do not have much time to dwell on the reverse. The visit of Wolves on Tuesday will focus the players' minds, while supporters might be temporarily distracted at least by rumours of a £1billion takeover bid, which is supposedly about to be launched by a Far East consortium.

Sources close to the Glazer family are sticking to the official line, which is always trotted out when stories of this nature appear: "Manchester United is not for sale."

It has also been pointed out that while a £1billion bid would represent a pretty hefty sum, it would undervalue the club by 50% compared to the valuation placed on it by respected American business magazine Forbes 18 months ago.

Although a global recession has taken hold since that time, it would appear highly unlikely the Glazer family would accept a £1billion sum given it would effectively represent a loss on the investment they made in 2005 when current debt levels are taken into account.

There is little doubt the Glazers have made United a more streamlined and, in pure day-to-day business terms, a more profitable organisation than when they bought it for £800million so, unless there are financial reasons for a sale, which have always been totally rejected, it would make little sense for a deal to be done at the figure quoted.

Not that Sir Alex Ferguson and his players can afford to spend time worrying about that, knowing victory over Wolves is now a necessity.

"We didn't have the patience in the last third of the field," said Serbian defender Nemanja Vidic, who had a goalbound effort cleared off the line by Stewart Downing.

"Aston Villa defended well and were a handful up front.

"But Chelsea are still not too far from us. The gap is only three points.

"Thankfully the next match comes quickly, which is always important after a defeat.

"It gives you a quick chance to play better and fix what happened in the previous one."

Our beloved Champs were very UNLUCKY to have lost to A Villa...... not to say that Villa did not play well, just that we could have been 3 goals up before half time......

I fear that we might end up trophy - less this year.... why you might ask...

1. It would seem that SAF is relying too much on the old boys (Rio, Giggs, Scholes, Neville, Brown, Carrick, OShea)

2. New players are not given enough opportunities to play.... Gibson, Obertan, Brazilian twins, Tosak, Mecheda etc)

3. Under or non-performing players are not sold or released... Nani, Bebartov, Foster, Welbeck, Hargreaves

4. David Gill seems to be cutting cost and not allowing spending on new signings

5. There is no excitement and our Champs are becoming very predictable and very jaded.... hence losing and drawing games which we should have won..... Chelsea, Liverpool & Villa

6. SAF is constantly complaining that the market is overpriced.... yet other clubs are briskly doing transfers.... i do suspect that his hands are tied from spending

I sincerely hope that SAF can find his hunger and fire for the remaining of the season....... and DO WISH that SAF would hang up his Manager's hat, RETIRE...... so that Jose Morinho can step in to revamp, rebuild, rejuvenate and secure for us another 20 years of football legacy.
