Jalan Bakar Batu, JB broadens to 6 lanes

Report from The New Straits Times dated 24 October 2013

Jalan Bakar Batu, JB broadens to 6 lanes

JUNE 2014 COMPLETION: Upgrading is for main access to the Mid Valley Southkey Megamall project

JOHOR BARU: IN line with the development of the RM6 billion Mid Valley Southkey Megamall in Kampung Bakar Batu, here, the developers are upgrading the existing Jalan Bakar Batu dual-carriageway to six lanes.

The upgrading of the 1.8-kilometre stretch is expected to be ready by June2014

Selia Pantai, a public-private partnership between Selia Group and the Johor state investment company, Kumpulan Prasarana Rakyat Johor, started the upgrading works last December.

Its group chief executive officer Datuk Mohamed Zaini Amran said Jalan Bakar Batu is the main access road to the megamall.

The other access roads are from Jalan Tebrau and the Eastern Dispersal Link. The project is also a mere five-minute drive from the Customs, Immigration and Quarantine Complex.

The massive development is a joint collaboration between Selia Pantai and property developer IGB Corporation Bhd.

Also present at the groundbreaking ceremony for the shopping mall were IGB group managing director Robert Tan and Southkey Properties Sdn Bhd executive director Quek Cham Hong.

When ready, the mall is expected to attract more than two million shoppers a month.

Tan said the mall, which will be completed in the last quarter of 2016, has begun its first phase of development.

The whole project will take 12 years to complete and will comprise eight 30-storey tower blocks featuring three hotels, namely Cititel Johor Baru with 675 rooms, Boulevard Hotel (450 rooms) and The Gardens Hotel (450 rooms). There will also be four office blocks and a serviced apartment with 180 units. A total of 8,923 parking bays will be located over two basements and some elevated floors.

Four-hour ride of terror in Johor Baru for S'porean couple

Report from The New PAPER {Singapore} dated 31 October 2013 :-

Four-hour ride of terror in Johor Barufor S'porean couple

The Singaporean couple were refuelling their car near the Plaza Pelangi shopping mall in Johor Baru for the trip home at about 11.15pm on Saturday.

But the Lims were suddenly approached by two men in their 30s, one of whom had a knife. They said Mr Lim owed them RM65,000 (S$25,600) and recognised him through his vehicle’s licence plate number.

The couple had travelled to Johor Baru more than 40 times in the past two years and had never encountered anyone making such a claim.

Fearing for their safety, Mr Lim sped off towards the immigration checkpoint. The two men caught up with the couple in their white lorry.

Then followed four nerve-racking hours driving around the city from one ATM to another to draw money to pay the men.

The two men took off with RM6,000 and the couple's mobile phones.

JB to Pekan Baru, Sumatra by Firefly

Report from The New Straits Times dated 1 November 2013 :

JB to Pekan Baru, Sumatra by Firefly

FLYFIREFLY Bhd, the operator of Firefly, started its maiden Senai-Pekan Baru flight service recently.

Although the company is using its ATR aircraft which could accommodate only 72 passengers, it is the service which is far more meaningful than the seating capacity. The flight opens a new chapter not only in the Johor aviation industry, but also the tourism industry.

Of so many Indonesian destinations, why Pekan Baru?

After all, a Google search on Pekan Baru does not yield many results, as the Riau capital city is hardly a tourist destination. A local tour guide even said: "Pekan Baru is a business hub."

What business? Well, most of Indonesia's petroleum is produced in Riau, and most of Pekan Baru economy is based on the petroleum industry. This is below the earth's surface. Above, Riau is rich with oil palm cultivation.

The two types of oil are alluring enough, at least for Malaysian investors, which explains why several airlines are capitalising on the Riau market.

But the aviation industry is not a one-way traffic. No airline operators will be interested to operate a flight service to a certain destination with full passenger load but empty seats on return.

So who could possibly be onboard the aircraft during the return trip, besides businessmen?

Other than the new tourist destinations in Johor, such as the Legoland Theme Park and the Puteri Harbour Family Theme Park, to attract the Indonesians, Firefly is looking at a bigger picture -- medical tourism.

For over a decade, many Indonesians from Sumatra flocked to Malaysia for better quality medical service in the Klang Valley and Malacca.

Despite the presence of a number of specialist hospitals in Johor Baru, the absence of direct flight service between Sumatra and Johor has curtailed efforts to push for medical tourism.

The Malaysian consul in Pekan Baru, Azizan Ismail, said about 7,000 people fly from Riau to Malaysia for medical treatment monthly.

It is learnt that many sought medical treatment in Malacca as it is cheaper than in the Klang Valley.

These are golden eggs not only for operators of specialist hospitals, but also the aviation industry players.

Before the start of the Senai-Pekan Baru sector by Firefly, Pekan Baru is served only by AirAsia from the Low Cost Carrier Terminal in Sepang and Firefly from the Subang Airport.

With the start of the Senai-Pekan Baru service, the two cities are now only 50 minutes apart. This will give the Indonesians in search for medical treatment more options .

FlyFirefly Bhd chief commercial officer Azman Ahmad is optimistic about the passenger load, and hinted that the airline will fly to even more destinations in Indonesia.

It is learnt that the airline is interested to tap the potential of Medan in northern Sumatra.

The Johor Media Club and FlyFirefly Bhd recently organised a familiarisation tour for Johor pressmen to Pekan Baru. Its Pekan Baru counterpart also reciprocated by collaborating with the airline company with hope to promote Johor.

Such a two-way cooperation is lauded, since there are a lot of similarities between Johor Baru and Pekan Baru in terms of language, food, and culture.

Firefly, as a community airline, shoulders the responsibility of bridging the two cities and drawing people from both sides of the Malacca Straits even closer.

Hassle-free rides to Legoland

Report from The New Straits Times dated 1 November 2013 :-

Hassle-free rides to Legoland

ONLINE BOOKING EASE: International theme park pairs up with MyTeksi for the convenience of visitors

MALAYSIA'S leading mobile taxi booking application MyTeksi and Legoland Malaysia joined forces recently to ensure safer, hassle-free rides to customers visiting Malaysia's first international theme park located in Nusajaya, Johor.

The partnership will start from this month and will benefit visitors especially tourists and families that want ease of travel.

In line with MyTeksi's emphasis on safety, this taxi booking service is offered in collaboration with Edaran Tan Chong Motor Sdn Bhd, which currently sponsors a driving school at Legoland Malaysia.

The driving school is one of the park's most loved attractions where children will get the chance to drive a Lego themed car in a circuit that replicates real-life situations. This attraction promotes safety and values to children in a fun environment.

The taxi booking service focuses on customers leaving Legoland after a day's excursion. Bookings will be made by the park's customer service staff who have been trained to use the MyTeksi app.

Customers are given a choice to select either executive or budget taxis via the app, and then proceed to the designated taxi stand to take their taxi anywhere within the city.

MyTeksi Sdn Bhd regional marketing head Cheryl Goh said that Legoland's customer service staff will save visitors the hassle of trying to arrange transport home after a long day of fun.

"Taking public transport minimises the strain of driving through traffic and finding parking, especially when you have a car full of children.

"Future collaborations are a definite possibility, as we welcome partnerships with other theme park operators in this region as well," added Goh.

"MyTeksi's three main principles are convenience, safety and certainty.

"We hope that we can continue to build trust and increase awareness in using the mobile taxi booking app to ensure booking confirmation and eliminate overcharging of taxi fares. This will also ensure a safe ride with our fleet of taxis that have gone through a stringent selection process."

The MyTeksi app will automatically detect the passenger's current location using the smart phone's in-built GPS (global positioning system) reader.

The passenger then selects the desired destination, and nearby taxis and estimated distances will be shown on the map.

Upon making the booking, the commuter will receive a confirmation within one minute. Information such as estimated time of arrival, the taxi's number plate and contact details will be given.

The "Share My Ride" tool allows passengers to share details such as the driver's name, license plate and contact details with their loved ones, with the ability to track the taxi down in real-time.

Legoland Malaysia's director of sales and marketing Thila Munusamy said that with such a strong safety commitment from MyTeksi, this collaboration with Legoland is definitely a strategic one.

Tips from Singapore and Johor police

Report from The New Paper (Singapore) dated 2 November 2013 :-

Tips from Singapore and Johor Police
By Ng Jun Sen and Matthaeus Choo

A Singaporean couple was robbed in JB at a petrol station right next to the Johor police HQ. They had called the JB police to come assist them, but no help arrived even after 15 minutes of stalling for time with the robbers.
Here are some tips from the Singapore and JB police:

- Never take shortcuts through dark, deserted places. Keep to well-lit areas with people and traffic.

- Pack your belongings in inconspicuous bags. Expensive bags can draw unnecessary attention.

- Clean out your wallet or purse before you go. take only essential credit cards. Avoid carrying large amounts of cash.

- Don't display expensive jewellery, cameras and other items that might draw attention.

- Don't be distracted by strangers creating a commotion or accidentally spilling something onto you.

- Carry your purse close to your body. Carry your wallet in your front pocket.

- Park your vehicle in well-lit areas and in parking spaces where there is security.

- Use additional security equipment such as steering wheel locks, clutch and brake locks, disc locks, gear locks and audible alarm systems to secure your vehicle. Johor police hotline: 07-221-2999

18 women caught giving erotic massages, detained in raid

18 women caught giving erotic massages, detained in raid

A SYNDICATE that provided prostitutes was uncovered at three traditional massage centres when 18 women were caught giving erotic massages to their customers.

Kosmo! reported that immigration officers had posed as customers before they conducted a raid at an outlet in Batu Pahat, Johor, on Sunday.

One customer, who had paid RM60 for the services of a masseuse, attempted to escape during the raid, said Johor Immigration Department assistant deputy director Khairulanuar Abu Bakar.

The women who were detained during the raid were from Thailand and China.

According to Khairulanuar, the women would caress their customers during the massage as a means of luring them into paying an additional RM50 for sexual services.

Three suspected Thai call girls nabbed in JB

Report from The New Straits Times dated 29 November 2013:-

Three suspected Thai call girls nabbed in JB

SYNDICATE CRIPPLED: The foreign nationals were using a house in Taman Johor Jaya for vice activities

JOHOR BARU: IT was just an ordinary house in the residential area of Taman Johor Jaya, here. Unbeknown to the public, the house was a front for foreign women who offered sex to customers.

It is learnt that the women would entice their customers by offering aphrodisiacs and porn reading materials to stimulate themselves before they had sex.

The foreign women, who are mainly Thais, were also known to use such methods for customers with impotence problems.

On Wednesday, the state Immigration Department raided the premises and arrested three Thai women who were believed to have used the house as a front for their illegal activities.

The state Immigration Department's 6P Integrated Operation coordinating head Masri Adul said initial investigations revealed that the women had used the house as a base for their illegal activities.

"They would accept customers via phone calls. However, they would only accept certain customers to avoid being arrested by the authorities," he said.

Masri said the women, aged between 30 and 50, including a woman believed to be the mama-san, were detained at 4.30pm.

"The syndicate was crippled after department officers pretending to be customers raided the place," he said.

One of the women who is in her 50s is believed to have been staying illegally in the country since 2009.

The two other women entered the country over a month ago.

It was found that the women usually charged RM150 per session. Masri said they seized condoms, aphrodisiacs and lubricants believed to be used by the women.

He said the condoms were hidden inside tea and soap containers, the refrigerator and under a rubber mat in the house.

"It shows that the syndicate planned their operations well to avoid being detected by the authorities," said Masri, adding that the women were taken to Pekan Nanas Immigration Detention Centre pending investigations under Immigration Act 1959/63.

AirAsia starts flight from JB to Bandung, Indonesia

JOHOR BARU: Budget airline AirAsia has strengthened its position in its southern hub with the launch of flights between Bandung and here.
