Above is the bus chart for people who are keen to explore ISSAN but with a budget, All buses to ISSAN departs from the Chatuchak Bus Station and there are various classes of buses depending of your budget. Unless you're damm broke or stingy, try to to take the VIP or 32 seater coaches if not you will be in a hell of the ride trying to squeeze through a long journey with the 2nd and 3rd class coach.

Unhappy Re: Udon Thani and Nong Khai

Hi pp,

I have 3D4Ns in BKK, I am thinking of going NongKhai visit a friend. Sad thing is because of the journey, I can only see my friend for a day. I understand that travel by bus or train will take 10-11hours avg.

Here is my plan.

Monday - Night touch down BKK and night stop BKK.
Tuesday - Night take bus to NongKhai
Wednesday - Morning reach NongKhai and night stop NongKhai
Thursday - Morning leave NongKhai, Night reach BKK
Friday - Leave BKK

Can some experts advise me???

This website is all Thai which I can't understand.
ºÃÔÉÑ· ¢¹Êè§ ¨Ó¡Ñ´ : www.transport.co.th

Wiki extract:
By bus

There are departures to Udon Thani at least once per hour from the BKS station on the main drag, Prajak road. The hour-long ride costs 20 baht in 3rd class (non-air con).

There are several departures daily from Bangkok (~9 hours), and across the border direct from Vientiane (55 baht, 17000 kip, two hours) via the Friendship Bridge.

A 1st class bus service connects Nong Khai directly with Suvarnabhumi Airport (the new BKK). Anyone know where is this service? Can't locate at the airport web. Must buy advance ticket???
[edit]

By train

Train service must book in advance? Where is the train station at bkk???

Nong Khai is the terminus of the Northeastern railway line from Bangkok via Khon Kaen and Udon Thani. The trip takes 10-12 hours and a first class sleeper ticket from Bangkok to Nong Khai or vice versa is currently about 1200 baht, and a second class sleeper ticket (not bad for the price) is 748 baht ($21.43 USD as of Jan 2009). Sleepers often sell out at peak times so you may need to book in advance.

Effective March 5th, 2009, shuttle services operate from Nong Khai to Tha Nalaeng, Laos (near Vientiane) twice a day, with departures from Nong Khai at 10 AM and 4:20 PM and trains back at 11 AM and 5:05 PM. These are actually operated by the long-distance trains coming in from Bangkok, but you can only buy tickets at Nong Khai station, and you need to pass through immigration as well. (If coming in on train #69 from Bangkok, there's a 90-minute window to do this.) Once the formalities are done, the trip itself across the Friendship Bridge only takes 15 minutes. Visa on arrival is not yet available, so you need an advance visa to use this service.

Also anyone can recommend accommodation in NongKhai???

Re: Udon Thani and Nong Khai

I think your trip would be too rush. Too much time spent travelling.

Regarding the website, what do you want to find out?

The bus station, if they refer to Suvarnabhumi airport, it's probably at the basement area. And really, it's one of those scheduled ones, so there's no need to buy a ticket too early in advance.

Never took a train before, so I can't help you on train.

Regarding where to stay, why don't you just ask your friend to give you reccomendations? Or better still, stay at his/her place. Thais are always very hospitable to guests, especially from Dtang Jangwat... or Dtang Brathet, as it is.

Wow... you had dug out this 2+ year thread just for visiting a "friend" in NongKhai? Since your itinerary is so short, why not request your "friend" come and meet you in BKK? In that case, you could have more time with each other, isn't it? However if you are determine to travel up to NongKhai in the faster way and which money is not an issue, I suggest to you to take a flight to Udon Thani and then take an hour bus to NongKhai.

Thai Airways

Nokair

AirAsia

Re: Udon Thani and Nong Khai

To save time

Take a transit flight from Bkk - Airasia has direct flight to Udon.

From Udon Airport there are plenty of minivans to Nong Khai and beyond.

Hope the above helps.
