Vietnamese doctors remove pair of scissors colleagues left in patient for 18 years

Vietnamese doctors have retrieved a pair of medical scissors that their colleagues had left in the stomach of a man for nearly two decades.

The operation to take the scissors out of the belly of M.V.N., 54, took place on Saturday at Cast-Iron and Steel Hospital in the northern province of Thai Nguyen, with support from medical professionals from Hanoi.

The pair of scissors had been stuck in the patient’s stomach for 18 years, surgeons said, adding that it lied on the left side of the belly, next to the colon.

The handles of the pair of scissors had become rusty and some of the organs had stuck to the medical device, doctors said.

N. had not felt anything strange over the years and never visited a doctor for any problem related to the pair of scissors inside his body until recently, a surgeon involved in the operation said.

N., hailing from the northern province of Bac Kan, got into a road accident in December so he came to Cast-Iron and Steel Hospital for a medical check.

An ultrasound test then showed that there was a strange object in his guts, believed to be a pair of medical scissors.

N. claimed he had gone under the knife at Bac Kan General Hospital in June 1998 and has never had any more medical operation since.

Recently he felt some pain in the belly area, trying to treat it with medicines in vain.

On December 27, N. returned to Bac Kan General Hospital for another ultrasound scan that also showed the same strange object.

The Ministry of Health has required the management of the hospital in Bac Kan, where doctors allegedly left the pair of scissors in N.’s body after the surgery in 1998, to investigate the incident and report its results.

But medical professionals say hospitals tend to file patient records for only 15 years so it will be hard to find out who is to blame in N.’s case.

80 projects to be executed in Saigon to curb congestion in 2017

Authorities in Ho Chi Minh City are set to implement some 80 projects, costing over US$60 million, in 2017 in a bid to alleviate traffic congestion.

The municipal Department of Transport said the projects would be executed at the city’s transport hub and traffic hotspots to minimize the risk of traffic jams and their impacts on local citizens.

Officials have scratched their heads over congestion on the roads leading to Tan Son Nhat International Airport, which was originally designed to welcome 25 million passengers each year.

However, the airdrome has handled over 26.5 million passengers, which exceeded its capacity, placing immense pressure on the terminals as well as on traffic infrastructure around its entrance.

The prime minister has approved two major projects to relieve such stress on the local streets, which are set to be carried out in an urgent manner.

The two schemes include the construction of two flyovers, one connecting Truong Son and Hong Ha Streets in Tan Binh District and another linking Nguyen Thai Son and Nguyen Kiem Streets in Go Vap District.

Sections of four other roads, namely Hoang Minh Giam, Cong Hoa, Hoang Hoa Tham, and Phan Thuc Duyen, which lead to the airport, will be expanded.

According to the transport department, the above projects will cost a total of VND1.38 trillion ($60.8 million).

About 14 projects estimated to cost nearly VND5 trillion ($220.4 million) are ready to be kick-started in 2017 to upgrade infrastructure at Cat Lai Port and the surrounding streets.

Such efforts are exerted to eliminate severe bottlenecks on Dong Van Cong Street, Hanoi Highway, and Mai Chi Tho Avenue.

In order to develop a congestion-free environment in downtown areas and at entrances to the southern city, some 55 plans have been added to the list, with capital totaling VND32.2 trillion ($1.4 billion).

Among them, some noticeable works include the flyover at Go Vap Roundabout, two bridges connecting Nguyen Van Cu and Nguyen Tri Phuong Streets in District 5 with Vo Van Kiet Street in District 8, a tunnel at An Suong Intersection in District 12, and the Nhi Thien Duong 1 Bridge in District 8.

Two new bridges are also set to be constructed at the Cat Lai and Binh Khanh Ferry Stations to meet the increasing demand for transportation.

Cat Lai Station connects District 2, Ho Chi Minh City, with neighboring Dong Nai Province while Binh Khanh links Nha Be and Can Gio, the two outlying districts of Ho Chi Minh City.

A new street will be built to facilitate travel between the southern metropolis with the Mekong Delta provinces.

Nightmare: Serious congestion at Saigon entrances after New Year holiday

People traveling back to Ho Chi Minh City after their New Year holiday trips were mired in severe traffic congestion that lasted for hours on Monday.

They rushed back to the southern city in the evening following a three-day holiday to resume their work, creating long lines of vehicles at both entrances to the metropolis.

As New Year’s Day fell on Sunday, most workers in Vietnam were given another day off on Monday, allowing them to enjoy a three-day weekend break from December 31 January 2.

Many people thus went on a vacation or return to their hometown in other provinces to celebrate the new year with their loved ones.

At the western gate to the southern hub, vehicles of all types were stuck in serious congestion as people dashed back to the city from the Mekong Delta region.

Cars and motorbikes were traveling at a snail’s pace in gridlock that lingered well into the night.

The eastern entrance to the city was also congested by a large number of commuters who had just concluded their trips to the southern beach city of Vung Tau, the resort town of Da Lat in the Central Highlands, and the south-central beach city of Nha Trang.

The congestion was exacerbated by a road collision between two cars on the Ho Chi Minh City-Long Thanh-Dau Giay Expressway, which connects the city with neighboring Dong Nai Province.

The volume of vehicles on the expressway rose by 1.5 times during the holiday.

According to the National Committee for Traffic Safety, traffic jams were less severe than those in the past thanks to thorough preparations by competent agencies.

However, there have been reports that passenger buses overcharged passengers and carried more people than allowed.

Ninety-three accidents happened during the three festive days across Vietnam, killing 79 people and injuring 54 others, the committee said.

Among them, 91 crashes occurred on the road, claiming 77 lives, and the other two were railway accidents, which resulted in two fatalities.
