The Best of Boat Noodle
If you want to try boat noodles in Bangkok, do not miss out the Victory Monument Boat Noodles Alley where several different boat noodle restaurants are situated next to one another by a canal. Not exactly the most authentic experience as the noodles are not served from boats. They are tasty, nonetheless. The Victory Monument Boat Noodles Alley is located within walking distance from the Victory Monument BTS Station. How to go: Once you exit the BTS station, walk towards the direction of the Victory Monument and along the skywalk on the right hand side all the way to the end till you see this canal. Walk down the flight of stairs to the ground level and you’re here at the boat noodles alley.Victory Monument, Phaya Thai Ratchathewi, Bangkok All of these restaurants by the canal serve up boat noodles and they are differentiated by the different colours of t-shirts the staff are wearing. I must say each restaurant has their own customer base but the one that I would highly recommend is located right at the end. Address: Victory Monument, Phaya Thai Ratchathewi, Bangkok Tel: +66 (0) 2271 3178 Opening hours: 9.00am to 9.00pm daily

Another nice street food to share
FISH MAW SOUP Address: 2043/3 Soi Sukhumvit 77/1, Khwaeng Phra Khanong Nuea, Khet Watthana, Krung Thep Maha Nakhon 10110, Thailand Location was near to Soi Sukhumvit 77/1 (near On Nut BTS Station). There is a food street which is very similar to Sukhumvit Soi 38. Before it gets too crowded, head there now to enjoy good food. This fish maw soup uncle has been saying for years that he is moving out but he is still here and is very busy during dinner time. He makes good bowl of fish maw soup. The soup is rich and tasty, yet not overpowering. Couple with fish maw and blood cake, you can choose to have it with rice or noodles. Don’t forget to add some quality vinegar to enhance the flavours. Look at the pig blood. Aroy Mak Mak!!!!

Re: Food glorious food! Thailand
Just sharing a tourist place but also very nice place for padthai for local as well, as I was brought there by a local.
Thipsamai Padthai. What's unique about this dish is that the pad thai is cover with a very creamy half cooked omelette. Ingredients are fresh and the noddle is bouncy and well cooked. |

KHIANG AROY
Address: Khet Watthana, Krung Thep Maha Nakhon 10110, Thailand Khiang Aroy’s owner Ah Khiang has been invited to the palace every year to cook for the royalty and he is extremely proud of it with photos and plaques plastered on the wall (he is a teochew ah hia by the way). Just how amazing he is? At his shop located between On Nut Alley 15 and 17, they fry pretty good Char Kway Teow. He produces his own soy sauce to add into his cooking. There are two options: the stir fried CKT (dry version) and hor fun (wet version). I prefer the former with good wok hei and lots of eggs. The latter is a little different from our local zi char hor fun. They added fermented bean paste (dao cheou) into their hor fun and it’s sweeter than Singapore’s version. They also serve suki – vermicelli in fermented bean curd soup. Also, another must try is their deep fried pork neck with garlic. SUPER SHIOK!

Re: Food glorious food! Thailand
Khao Man Gai is a popular meal in Thailand but you need to know where to enjoy it.
By ThaiPBS dd 16/12/2020 Plates of plenty The much-loved one-dish meal Khao Man Gai (chicken and rice) varies in taste from stall to stall in Thailand and at popular places it is not easy to get a seat without queuing. The dish is highly accessible, delicious, satisfying and reasonably priced and can be so good that one specialist shop has even earned recognition from the Michelin guide! For the vendors, it’s a logical way to make a living. The dish isn’t too complicated to make and doesn’t require much in the way of culinary skills though ensuring it is so delicious that everyone wants some is another story. Roadside stalls don’t require licenses or government permission except if they are operating as a franchise. That’s probably why there are shops selling chicken and rice at every corner. The steamed chickens advertise themselves by dangling from hooks, a sight that tends to horrify those from other cultures but for local and expats in Thailand, gets the mouth watering and the stomach rumbling, For Thais, good chicken-rice is often associated with the world “Hai Lam” or Hainan island. Foodies believe that only Hainan Island sells chicken-rice but that’s simply not true. Many localities in China produce great chicken-rice dishes too, such as Sichuan which excels with its hot sauce and pepper. Commercial wisdom dictates that chicken-rice shops in Bangkok advertise their product as Hainan chicken-rice even if they know nothing about Hainan island, let alone how to make good chicken rice. Like many other stereotypes such as the Hakka Chinese are good at doing laundry while Teochew Chinese are good businessmen, this recipe gets it reputation from the ethnic Chinese who settled in Thailand at the beginning of last century. A reasonably priced plate ranges from 40 to 50 baht, but for a more pleasurable treat, order rice with a separate deboned chicken. The price can be as high as 100 baht-plus depending on the shop and the location and like other dishes, hundreds of Khao Man Gai shops are now available on applications and all offer delivery services. Cooking rice for Khao Man Gai is not easy. One of methods to cook the rice properly is to pan-fry uncooked rice over a low flame with garlic, gradually adding chicken fat and making sure that the fat is well mixed in. Chicken broth is then added and allowed to simmer until it is well cooked. Nowadays, most rice in road-side shops is no longer cooked the old-fashioned way. Apart from properly cooked rice, the chicken must be boiled perfectly so that the meat is juicy and tender. The quality of chicken is all important too, so many shops/restaurants have their own suppliers. Here are some of popular Khao Man Gai joints in Bangkok, most of them available on food delivery applications, Go-Ang Khao Man Gai Pratunam (a Bib Gourmand in Bangkok Michelin Guide 2018, 2019) Midnight chicken at Pratunam (blue shirt) – One of the oldest and most famous chicken rice shops in the Pratunam area – a stone’s throw from Platinum Mall Ruean Ton, Montien Hotel – One of legendary chicken rice shops and well worth a visit despite the added VAT and service charge. 888 Chicken Rice Shop – Pattanakarn Road, Suan Luang District Boon Tong Kee – First branch at Soi Thonglor and Siam Paragon, chicken rice from Singapore. |

FISHBALL NOODLES
Address: Soi Sukhumvit 77/1, Khwaeng Phra Khanong Nuea, Khet Watthana, Krung Thep Maha Nakhon 10110, Thailand There is a fishball noodles stall at the entrance of Soi Sukhumvit 77/1 that says “拉差粿条自制鱼丸可口会跳”. Very interesting caption! This stall used to be at Pratunum, but the 39-year-old owner let his relatives run it and he moved to On Nut 10 years ago. This is the 5th generation fishball noodles and the whole family has many fishball noodle stalls around Bangkok. Each stall used to do their own fishballs but it was too much work, so one of his uncles started the fishball making business and supply it to all the outlets. The fishballs are made purely from ikan parang (Xi Dao) and it is very soft and bouncy. They serve 3 kinds of soup base here – clear soup, tom yam or yong tau foo. I recommend you to go for the yong tau foo version with the pig’s blood. The pinkish red soup has an addictive sweetness and there are about 5 different kind of noodles for you to choose from

Re: Food glorious food! Thailand
Kaiton Pratunam (Ko-Ang) ไก่ตอนประตูนำ้ (โกอ่าง)
Address: Soi Petchaburi 30, New Petchaburi Road, Makkasan, Ratchawithi, Bangkok, Thailand Hours: 5:30 am – 3:30 pm & 5:00 pm – 3:00 am Phone: 0-2252-6325 Prices: Plate of chicken rice and soup is just 30 THB (about $1) It’s not one of Thailand’s most flavorful $1 dishes… but that’s alright. Sometimes you just need something comforting, a dish to cleanse the palate and something soothing on the mouth and stomach. When this situation arises, Khao Man Gai (ข้าวมันไก่), Thai style chicken and rice is always waiting right around a corner in Bangkok. Chicken Rice This version of chicken and rice originated in Hainan, China, and spread while being perfected in places like Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand. Since it’s such a common dish, just like khao moo daeng, making a good plate of khao man gai (ข้าวมันไก่) is about paying attention to the finest details. I very rarely indulge in khao man gai (ข้าวมันไก่), I guess it’s because there are so many other Thai dishes that are more pungently sour and spicy and honestly just more exciting to eat. But like I’ve mentioned countless times before, I believe the power of a local crowd mustered at a dining establishment is something we should all pay close attention to. With thousands and thousands of restaurant stalls in Bangkok, the bottom line is if there are lots of locals eating there, the restaurant must be doing something right. How to Get There The restaurant is located in the Pratunam area of Bangkok, right across the street form Pratunam Center on Petchaburi Soi 30. It’s just a 5 minute walk from the mega Platinum Shopping Center.

Re: Food glorious food! Thailand
Kuay Teow Khae (ร้านก๋วยเตี๋ยวแคะ)
Address: Silom, Soi Convent, about a 3 minute walk from Sala Daeng BTS station Open hours: 7 am – 2 pm on Tuesday – Saturday Prices: I ordered the biggest bowl for 60 THB ร้านก๋วยเตี๋ยวแคะ ซอยคอนแวนต์ ต้มยำแห้งเส้นโซบะ พิเศษ เปิด อังคาร-เสาร์ 7.00-14.00 น. Kuay Teow Khae (ร้านก๋วยเตี๋ยวแคะ) is a Bangkok street food stall that’s well worth seeking out when you’re in Silom during lunch. It is an extremely popular Thai street food noodle stall in downtown Silom, Bangkok. The egg noodles are crinkly, the seasoning is spicy and sour, and the crispy pork belly will crunch and melt in your mouth at the same time. When you’re in Silom at lunchtime, here are all the details you need to eat an amazing bowl of noodles at this packed street food stall. Silom has no shortage of excellent lunchtime Thai street food stalls. You’ll find everything, from rice and curry to amazing green papaya salad, to popular bowls of noodles. The stall is called Kuay Teow Khae (ร้านก๋วยเตี๋ยวแคะ) and it sets up along Soi Convent, right in the heart of Silom (just down the street from Sala Daeng BTS station) for lunch. They offer big portions for a decent price, and in my opinion it’s one of the tastiest lunchtime bowls of Thai noodles in Silom as well. They do have smaller sized bowls, 40 Baht, 50 Baht, and 60 Baht. And you also have the option to choose from a variety of different Thai noodles, all displayed in the cabinet in the cart. If you go right at 12 noon all the tables along the sidewalk will be full and there will likely already be a crowd waiting for a table. So if you have a flexible schedule, it can be wise to arrive about 11:30 am, or before, so you don’t have to wait too long.

Re: Food glorious food! Thailand
Som Tam Jay So (ร้านส้มตำเจ๊โส)
Address: Soi Phiphat 2, Silom, Bangkok 10500 Open hours: 8:30 am – 4:30 pm daily Price: About 40 – 50 THB per dish ที่อยู่ ซอยพิพัฒ 2 สีลม บางรัก กรุงเทพมหานคร 10500 โทร. 085-999-4225 เปิดบริการทุกวัน 8.30 – 16.30 น. Som Tam Jay So (ร้านส้มตำเจ๊โส) is a local Isaan restaurant in the Silom area of Bangkok, that I think serves some of the best som tam (green papaya salad) in the city. Their different versions of green papaya salad are outstanding, fiery hot, pungent with fermented fish sauce, and overall just thrilling to the taste buds. They also serve an assortment of other Isaan dishes, especially excellent chicken wings and grilled pork neck. For myself, eating som tam at Som Tam Jay So (ร้านส้มตำเจ๊โส) is about as close as you can get to eating in Isaan while still being in Bangkok. How to get there: Som Tam Jay So (ร้านส้มตำเจ๊โส) is located on Soi Phiphat 2, right off Soi Convent in Silom. It’s just a 5 minute walk from Sala Daeng BTS station.

Re: Food glorious food! Thailand
Tom Yum Goong Banglamphu (ร้านต้มยำกุ้งบางลำพู)
Address: Thanon Kraisi (right in front of the big Banglamphu car park), Talad Yawd Phra Nakhon, Bangkok, Thailand Open hours: 9 am – 6:30 pm daily Prices: The main shrimp dishes are 140 THB ที่อยู่ ถนนไกรสีห์ (หน้าอาคารจอดรถ กทม. ) ตลาดยอด พระนคร กรุงเทพมหานคร 10200 เปิดบริการทุกวัน 9.00 – 18.30 น. How to get there: Tom Yum Goong Banglamphu (ร้านต้มยำกุ้งบางลำพู) is located just outside the car park garage, on Soi Kraisi, just two roads down from Rambuttri and Khao San. Many street food stalls in Bangkok that look like Tom Yum Goong Banglamphu (ร้านต้มยำกุ้งบางลำพู) serve pretty average, typical Thai food. But Tom Yum Goong Banglamphu (ร้านต้มยำกุ้งบางลำพู), a well weathered street food stall just two blocks from Khao San road, located on the sidewalk outside of the main Banglamphu car park, is a street food stall that produces some seriously glorious shrimp dishes. The dish they are most well known for: tom yum goong (ต้มยำกุ้ง). We started out in Banglamphu, which is an old area of Bangkok, and one of the best areas in Bangkok for food in my opinion. We even decided to stay at a hotel, called Full House Khaosan (highly recommended place to stay by the way), just a stones throw from Khao San Road, and just around the corner from a street food stall known as Tom Yum Goong Banglamphu (ร้านต้มยำกุ้งบางลำพู), on Soi Kraisi. I’ll be straightforward when I tell you, it definitely won’t be the prettiest display of freshwater shrimp and seafood ingredients you’ll ever see at a Thai street food stall… but it definitely has some character. Tom Yum Goong Banglamphu (ร้านต้มยำกุ้งบางลำพู) is a Thai street food stall located just a stones throw from Khao San Road in the Banglamphu area of Bangkok, that specializes in shrimp. Although it’s not the prettiest of street food stalls in Bangkok, they manage to pull off one of the ultimate versions of Thai street food style tom yum goong (ต้มยำกุ้ง) in the city. I also tried the pla goong (พล่ากุ้ง), a shrimp salad full of herbs and dressed in lime juice and fish sauce. It was also delicious. As much as I wanted to order a third shrimp dish, since it was just Ying and I eating, we made the call that three shrimp dishes of this magnitude would be a little too much for just the two of us. So unfortunately as much as I wanted to try the goong tod gratiem (shrimp fried with garlic), which looked insanely good, we didn’t try it. So that will have to wait for next time.
