I think he's just being wise and streetsmart. The majority of the expats and even the locals all have some form of weapons within easy reach. These folks are definitely not the dangerous types but you just dun know when shit will hit upon you so it pays to be prepared. My favourite piece of toy is a foldable black blade bowie knife. Light and handy to carry around but when fully extended its simply awesome. They were dressed in bermudas and had waistpouches. At the entrance when the security searched them, out came the stun guns and balisong knives from the waistpouches. So even tourists carry weapons

Bro,personally I feel AC is much more fun than Bangkok. China is a whole different kettle of fish, so I wouldn't put Dongguan into this category. But AC is pretty ok if you want to relax and not be too picky on things. Good food, nice gals, superb entertainment and if you keep to the Fields, fairly safe.
