A domestic worker from Indonesia, Sulastri Sakiran Sumadi, 37, was sentenced to 12 months in jail on Wednesday for purposely hurting an 87 year old lady more than 20 times.

Sulastri was employed by Ms Marlene Poh Geok Hee, 51, but got into a dispute with Ms Poh in February last year.

To take revenge, Sulastri hurt Ms Poh’s elderly mother by either hitting her with objects slapping her or pinching her.

She faced 24 charges of causing hurt but agreed to plead guilty to 8 charges.

Sulastri was employed in April 2013 to do household chores and look after Mdm Tan, 87, who has Alzheimer’s, is bedridden and has many other medical conditions.

Between May 17 and June 21 2014, Sulatri repeatedly hurt Mdm Tan. Mdm Tan would not shout or retaliate to the attacks but would complain ‘sakit’ (Malay for pain) softly before apologising to the maid. It is apparent that Mdm Tan was not aware of why Sulatri was hurting her.

The employer had come to know of the assaults because she had installed a CCTV camera in her mother’s room without the maid’s knowledge.

Mdm Tan had on one occasion complained of a headache and that’s when Ms Poh made the discovery after reviewing the footage.

Sulastri pleaded for leniency explaining that her grudge was borne out of the fact that her own mother had died in February 2014 but she was denied leave to go home for the funeral proceedings or to spend time with her family.

Sulastri explained that she could not control her mind and she had taken her anger out on Mdm Tan.
