SINGAPORE — Seven people have been sent to hospital after a gas leak was reported at a facility at Jalan Samulun, said the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF).

The SCDF was alerted about the incident at around 9.20am on Sunday (Sept 4) and deployed three fire engines, four Hazardous Materials (HazMat) appliances, three ambulances and two support vehicles to the location, which is located near Jurong Shipyard.

In a posting on its Facebook page, the SCDF said the leak was traced to a one-tonne cylinder of chlorine gas housed within an indoor storage facility.

Three fire engines, four Hazardous Materials (HazMat) appliances, three ambulances and two support vehicles were deployed to the location.

The seven people, which includes two SCDF officers, were conveyed to Ng Teng Fong General Hospital for momentary exposure to the chlorine vapour. They were conscious but experienced eye irritation and difficulty in breathing.

As a safety precaution, all workers from the affected facility and its immediate neighbouring premises were evacuated from the location.

The SCDF HazMat specialist team, plugged the source of the leak within 20 minutes. Another team had simultaneously performed vapour suppression operation using three water jets.

The SCDF said that latest readings from the HazMat detectors confirmed no traces of chlorine vapour in the surrounding atmosphere.

The investigations into how this incident could have occurred is currently in progress.
