Raverboy’s Survivor Vietnam Episode 1 - Cafe Om Hell
Raverboy’s Survivor Vietnam
Episode 1 – Café-Om Hell Preface This is the first episode of a mini-series created for SBF and its HCMC thread, started partly as a tribute to a well-known television series, partly to let our readers live vicariously through the little adventures of somebody who spent his 1st year living in HCMC discovering D1 and D3 and who has decided to spend his 2nd year discovering the ‘other world out there’. D4, D7, D8, D. Binh Thanh, D. Go Vap, D. Tan Binh, D. Thu Duc… This is for all you Viet-lovers out there… Don’t worry – here no tribal council one. Café-Om Hell Deep in the bowels of Ho Chi Minh City, in a part of the city little known even by the majority of the Vietnamese and conveniently forgotten by those who are resident to the area, there is a street… A long street… half of it isn’t even lit or asphalted. When it rains, it becomes little more than a dirty pot-holed dirt track. Be careful, as you can lose your bike’s front tire in some of these potholes! As you approach this street, you can see the planes coming in to land or taking off from Tan Son Nhat airport. You can even see the concrete wall of the airport’s compound, which seems enormous compared to the maze of little alleys/hems nearby. Half of this street is in Tan Binh District, half of it in Go Vap, but the division is of no matter, riding along this street you feel like you have stepped into a parallel universe… In the eerie darkness, there is no question what these small houses have in store – colourful muted fluorescent lighting, an empty storefront, a door leading into more darkness behind. A solitary girl or two sitting and waiting on plastic chairs in front. We counted at least 6-8 of these shop houses along the entire stretch, all of them are along the unlit and un-surphaced portion of the street. Despite the darkness, there was quite a bit of motorbike traffic although hardly anyone stopped. Neither did the girls call or wave out to the passers-by. We were 3 guys on 2 motorbikes. We made an initial recce ride through down the whole length of this street. Once we reached the other end, we contemplated stopping and trying one out. We turned back and started on a 2nd pass. By the time we stopped, we were way at the opposite end, exact point where we started. Sianzz, we decided to call it a night. OK, call us chicken, say we got no balls. But the potholes were too much. The quietness and darkness was too weird. Just as well… Several days later, we 3 met up again. My friend told me he had spoken to his regular xe-om rider about it. He thought we were crazy. Utterly mad. Apparently the café-oms here are notorious for one thing – you ride there, you park your bike, you go in, have your fun. After you finish, you pay up and get ready to leave, your bike is gone. Vanished. Nowhere to be found. What are you going to do next? Complain to Management? Call 911? Look for Cong An? Report to Better Business Bureau? Or deal with the 5 guys who have all of a sudden appeared from nowhere? Better brush up on your Vietnamese quick in order to bargain for your life. If you are successful, then you may bargain to buy your bike back. In this neck of the woods, you could vanish ... and they will never find you. …Just as well never go in… Disclaimer The above account is entirely fictitious of course Note that name of street is witheld to protect the innocent. (To anyone new: there's another thread now that's more focused on banter, this one more for straight info) I guess food's ok.... after all if one doesn't eat food, one will not live long enough to have sex. |

Re: Vietnam - HCM
Q7 is mainly occupied by Phu My Hung, an expatriate area with high rise condos and some higher class cafes. Other than that, you will have TAN MY, the local area of District 7. Lots of food there and also some local discos. In fact, Q8 is more happening than Q7. Q8 has a lot of beer om and also other cafes that serve more than coffee and tea.

Re: Vietnam - HCM
Wa D7 & D8 sound so happening leh.
Flying to SG tomorrow. This time, I will explore these underrated districts. Hope to make a little contribution into the Hurricane list. Cant find any of these R&R places at D7 or D8 in the list except for this one only. Paradise Club 2 Add: 333, Nguyen Thi Tap Street, District 7, Ho Chi Minh City Is this a disco or KTV? |
