Police solved case in 3 hours
May 12, 2007




CHINESE national Yuan Fu Di died in an accident with a champagne-coloured Hyundai Sonata on Outram Road around 10pm on Monday.

The 29-year-old was here on a social visit pass.

Eye witnesses were shocked when the car allegedly sped off after the accident.


One of them, Mr Jackie Hoo, 28, a businessman, had taken down the vehicle number of the hit-and-run driver before getting out of his car to check on the victim.

With the vehicle number, Traffic Police tracked down the suspect's mobile phone number and called him.

The driver was a 48-year-old businessman.

He later surrendered at Bukit Merah Neighbourhood Police Centre.

There, the driver failed a breathalyser test and was arrested on suspicion of drink driving.

Said Commander Traffic Police DAC Ng Guat Ting: 'We would like to commended MrJackie Hoo and other members of the public for their public spirited act in noting down the licence plate number of the vehicle involved in the hit and run accident.

'This public spiritedness has helped police solve the case within three hours.'

'At the same time, we would like to stress that all motorists should stop to render assistance when they are involved in accidents because it could make a difference between life and death.'

Singaporeans are funny people. There are so many beggars and homeless people on the streets who get no monetary assistance whatsoever from their fellow countrymen. However, drop dead and suddenly the whole of Singapore wants to show how generous and caring they are.
