Re: Bangkok Field Report
Bad start to the new year ...
Fireworks or electrical fault blamed as 59 killed in Bangkok nightclub blaze • Death toll likely to rise say rescue workers • Fire, smoke inhalation and stampede killed victims Dozens of charred bodies wrapped in white cotton sheets lay outside the Santika nightclub last night as the death toll in the Bangkok fire tragedy continued to rise and fire crews moved in to douse the embers of what remained of the building. At least 59 people who had gone to the club to welcome in the new year died in the blaze, which was thought to have been started by fireworks or an electrical fault; more than 130 were thought to have been injured. Re: Bangkok Field Report
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
I just came back to Singapore yesterday from BKK, after a trip to Laos and then to Dongguan. I got so much to share, especially my trip to Laos but then this news just hit me. Santika on fire after mid-night last night and with 59 confirmed dead. I am now frantically calling my friends who frequent there. So far no one is picking up the phone. I managed to get news on one of the waitress who works there. Her bro picked up the phone says she is in hospital, badly injured. Hard to swallow this as I just called this waitress just before boarding my flight yesterday, to tell her I was not coming to the "Goodbye Santika" party. She was already there and preparing for the party...not knowing disaster will hit that night. And I can't reach any of my friends. I hope they are not part of the body count. I was at Santika on Christmas day and ran into lots of friends, incl. ex-band from Live Impact. Also, RIP to those caught in this unfortunate situation. |

Re: Bangkok Field Report
BANGKOK (AFP) - - A fierce fire tore through an upscale Bangkok nightclub early Thursday as revellers celebrated New Year, killing at least 58 people and injuring more than 200, including foreigners, rescuers said.
The blaze broke out after a pyrotechnic display at the Santika club in the Thai capital's Ekkamai district, a thronging entertainment area frequented by locals and tourists. It was not clear if any foreigners were among the dead. The two-storey club was gutted by the fire, with the front of the building blackened and partially collapsed, an AFP correspondent said from the scene. Around 30 charred bodies were still inside the structure hours after the inferno. "It appears that the fire started from the area of the stage where a band was playing. There were some pyrotechnics and it appears that they started the blaze," Police Lieutenant Colonel Prawit Kantwol told AFP. "Most of the victims died from suffocation, but some were also killed in a stampede when people were trying to get out," he said. Almost all the dead were on the ground floor, where the stage was located. Police Colonel Sutin Sapmuang of the local police station said 58 people were so far confirmed killed in the blaze. "The cause of the fire is still under investigation," he told AFP. A Bangkok emergency services headquarters official said 207 people had been hurt, adding: "There are some foreigners injured from the blaze." Japan's Kyodo news agency, citing the Japanese embassy, said four Japanese nationals were injured, one seriously, while the Singaporean foreign ministry reported two of its citizens injured. The wounded were rushed to 14 hospitals around the capital suffering burns and smoke inhalation. The club, popular with Bangkok's elite, has a capacity of 1,000 people but it was not clear how many were in there at the time of the blaze. Fire brigade officials said the death toll was high because there were few exits from the building and because windows on the upper floors had iron bars across them. "There was only one main way to get out from the front. People who worked there were able to escape from the back because they knew the exits, but the others had no chance," senior fireman Wacharatpong Sri-Saard said. Some victims were trapped in the basement of the club, which was accessible via a narrow stairwell, he said. The roof of the building had also collapsed during the blaze. Police said the fire broke out between midnight and 1:00am, shortly after revellers had celebrated the coming of the New Year. Several dozen relatives, friends and bystanders remained outside what was left of the venue, desperately trying to get information about loved ones from the emergency services. Fire brigade officials and forensic police could be seen entering the club in an effort to establish exactly what had caused the fire, as the remains of charred furniture and equipment littered the ground outside. A billboard advertising the club's New Year party, with the logo "Goodbye Santika" and the names of DJs playing at the event, was still on show on the street outside hours after the blaze. The fire was the latest in a series of deadly blazes at nightclubs around the world in recent years. In 2003 a pyrotechnics display during a concert at the Station nightclub in Rhode Island in the United States set off a blaze that killed 100 people.

Re: Bangkok Field Report
So far, my close friends are ok. But I am still gathering news about others. Another one from Thailand called me to confirm that poor waitress hospitalization. Will visit her when I fly back BKK on 4th Jan.
But I hearing frightening stories. It seems most victims are on the toilets at the basements. Those toilet attendants or even the sweet gal selling popcorns might be dead. Fightening thoughts as my friend just gave a 100 baht tip to his regular toilet attendant a few days earlier and told him that should be the "last" time they will see each other since Santika is closing down. He is now haunted as to his statement of "last" time meeting each other. 30 cars are still parked outside Santika. The owners must be the victims. The Singapore guy casualty is identified as Teo Sze Siong. Peace to him and his family. Hope is not one of our bros. |

Re: Bangkok Field Report
Actual death toll at santika is above 70 and still counting.
2 of those dead were my friend's friend ( all gals ) who first time came from outer province to bkk. My thai wife was supposed to join them but bcos I don't feel like partying in a disco so she decide not to go. We have met the 2 dead gals just 2 days ago after having dinner at siam discovery with my lucky friend. After dinner when we were about to go home she say she need to meet her 2friends below.Whne we went down we had a brief introduction and then we parted. On new year eve after the countdown my friend call around 1am crying. This morning my wife followed her to chulalornkong and police hospital to identify her friends. My wife came back to say the death toll is more than 70 and not 59 as reported by the press. My friend saw the fire first hand coming from behind the stage.Initially she thought that the mgt have arrange some kind of special fire work display but realiase something not right and ran out of the window. There were 4 of them but 3 of them went to the toilet located in the basement by way of a spiral staircase. 1 of them told the other 2 decease that she go up first cos my friend is a lone at the bar counter.Less than 5mins after she got up the stage and the curtains caught fire very quickly and engulf the whole area in a very short time. Many near the stage who did not manage to rush out in time due to the many people jamming up near the small entrance got burn. Most of the dead died from smoke suffocation below the toilet as fire burn up but not down. Some victims were burn and hardly be recognise but my friend manage to identify her friend bcos she was not burn but dies of suffocation instead. She have not really identify the actual dead body yet as she is very frighten to see so many dead. She identify her friend from the photos taken by the police. Most male victim can be easily identify bcos of their wallet in their pocket. The harder ones to identify are the females as they carry bags. My friends contacted her friend's family but they refused to believe it as her friends told them that they are going to kanchanaburi instead. Haiz....really a sad new year beginning for those who loves that love ones. |
