Viagra Linked to Hearing Loss
WEDNESDAY, May 19 (HealthDay News) -- The erectile dysfunction drug Viagra, and possibly other similar medications, may prompt long-term hearing loss among users, a new study suggests.
In the May 18 issue of the Archives of Otolaryngology -- Head and Neck Surgery, researchers from the University of Alabama at Birmingham discuss evidence supporting an association between the onset of hearing problems and Viagra. The medication is one of the so-called class of phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors (PDE-5i), which also includes Cialis and Levitra.
The finding follows the 2007 decision by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to adjust labeling for such medications to more prominently display warnings about hearing loss risks. The move stemmed from reports that year regarding sudden hearing loss among users of these drugs.

"It appears from these findings that the current government warning regarding hearing loss and the use of PDE-5i medications is warranted," study author Gerald McGwin, a professor of epidemiology in the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Public Health, said in a news release. "Though there are limitations to this study, it is prudent that patients using these medications be warned about the signs and symptoms of hearing impairment and be encouraged to seek immediate medical attention to potentially forestall permanent damage."

The finding stems from an analysis of survey data concerning more than 11,500 men over the age of 40 that had been collected by the federal Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality between 2003 and 2006.


McGwin and his team found that men who said they used PDE-5i drugs had twice the risk for developing hearing loss as those who did not.

The authors stressed that more research is needed, while suggesting that one possible explanation could lie in the original purpose of these medications. They note that although now used mainly for erectile dysfunction, this class of drugs was initially prescribed for the treatment of pulmonary high blood pressure.
"PDE-5i medications work in erectile dysfunction patients by their ability to increase blood flow to certain tissues in the body," said McGwin. "It has been hypothesized that they may have a similar effect on similar tissues in the ear, where an increase of blood flow could potentially cause damage leading to
hearing loss."

KUALA LUMPUR: Foreign sex workers, at a couple of brothels at Taman Tun Dr Ismail area, received more than what they bargained for when undercover police from Kuala Lumpur's D7 (secret societies, vice and gambling) unit caught them redhanded during a raid last night.

Police mounted their operations at about 11pm following a tip-off that both the nearby 'massage parlours' were offering the infamous 'body to body' massage which includes sex as a value added service.

The police team, made up of 21 officers, nabbed eight women, all in their 20s, from Thailand and China.

KL D7 chief DSP Razali Abu Samah said the women violated the rules of their visitor's pass by engaging in illegal activities.

They were remanded to assist in further investigations.

"They charged customers RM150 per session and an extra RM100 for oral sex. This is against our moral values," said Razali

"They have not been charged yet, but were arrested on suspicion of money laundering and accepting illegal wagers," the spokesman said.

Police earlier this year set up a task force including officers from its triad bureau, narcotics unit and commercial crime division to clamp down on illegal football gambling, the South China Morning Post reported.

Punters in the football-mad southern Chinese city can bet legally through the Hong Kong Jockey Club, which also runs the former British colony's popular horse racing scene.

About 35 billion Hong Kong dollars in legal bets were placed on football matches in 2009, according to Jockey Club figures. There were no reliable numbers for illegal wagers.

China syphilis infections up 30% each year: report (AFP)

BEIJING — Rampant prostitution which has accompanied China's rapid economic growth is fuelling a 30 percent increase in syphilis infections each year, state media reported on Saturday.

Syphilis was almost wiped out in China 50 years ago, but has increased 10-fold over the past decade to emerge as one of the country's top five infectious diseases, the China Daily said, quoting the ministry of health.

The rate of mother-to-child transmissions jumped alarmingly to 57 cases per 100,000 newborns between 2003 and 2008, from a previous seven cases per 100,000, it said.

The report follows an article in the New England Journal of Medicine last month that said one child was born with syphilis in China each hour as infected men pass it onto their wives, who in turn pass it to their foetuses.

It added that at least a third of homosexual men were also married due to social pressures, further increasing transmission to spouses.

Syphilis is a bacterial infection which can be easily treated with antibiotics if diagnosed early, but if left untreated can lead to paralysis, blindness and death.

However, the spread of syphilis in China is further fuelled by a social stigma that discourages sufferers from seeking treatment, experts have said.

China had 32,000 new reported infections in May alone, including two deaths, the China Daily said.

China's rapidly growing economy has spurred huge population movements and a massive prostitution industry that have led to the resurgence of syphilis, the newspaper quoted experts saying.

"Massage parlours" and other venues for prostitution are ubiquitous in Chinese cities, despite it being illegal.

The newspaper said six million Chinese women were believed involved in the sex trade, but other independent estimates have put the figure twice as high.

No other country has seen such a rapid rise in syphilis cases since the discovery of penicillin, the New England Journal of Medicine article said.

Net massage course to boost men’s libido

Anri Suzuki, 24, earned her doctorate in history at one of the prestigious universities in her home country. It was through her thesis on the Japanese invasion of China that she became "remorseful" over the wrongs inflicted by her country.

Suzuki's idea of respect

"We have to respect history and cannot obliterate it. I want to cure the wounds of Chinese with my body, and I am practising this by offering sex with Chinese students in Japan," she told the Korean Times.

For farmer Abdul Sarang Bangun, 42, and his wife, Norhayati Hambong, 43, the most important thing is to trace the whereabouts of their daughter, whose real name is Marnie, and bring her safely back to their home in Kampung Gajah in Semporna.

Joy for a brief spell

For a brief moment, there were tears of joy when they heard that their daughter had visited Norhayati's brother, Ali Bais Hambong, at his home in Batu 14 in Hulu Langat, near here, on June 1.

They decided to use their savings and pawn their valuable items to buy the air tickets for Abdul Sarang ti fly here to meet their daughter.

However, his hopes were again dashed when, on reaching KL and going to his brother-in-law's home, Ali Bais told him that she had slipped out of the house at about 1am last Sunday without his knowledge.

"When we heard that Mimie was at my brother-in-law's place and had brought along her clothings to return home to Semporna, I quickly packed my bag and bought the tickets to come here," said Abdul Sarang, when interviewed by Utusan Malaysia at Ali Bais' house.

He was accompanied by another of Norhayati's brother, Mohd Yasin Hambong, as it was the first time that Abdul Sarang was travelling to Peninsular Malaysia and riding on a plane.

Hardship, sacrifices and love

"As I am just a farmer, I could not afford to come to KL but my wife said she was prepared to pawn her jewellery just to be able to buy the air tickets and for other neccessities for my stay here," added Abdul Sarang.

"I hope Mimie understands the hardship we are going through to bring her back home, not forgetting the sacrifices we have made and our love for her.

"Before I left Semporna, my wife told me that, no matter what, I must bring Mimie back home. And whenever she calls, she would repeat her plea," he said.

Abdul Sarang said Norhayati could hardly eat or sleep as she misses her daughter so much and would worry for her safety.

In contact with 'friend'

Meanwhile, Ali Bais said Mimie stayed at his home for six days and he was shocked when she unexpectedly ran away from the house.

"Mimie told me she wanted to go back to Sabah but, at the same, time she was always in contact with her friend.

"It looked like they had planned for Mimie to run away again last Sunday," he said.

Prior to the interview, Utusan Malaysia had reported that the missing teenager had left a note to her parents, which read: "Do not find me. Please forgive me, father, mother."

It is learned that her accomplice was formerly also staying in the same village as Mimie, aged about 20.
