This reminds me of old days. Back then, a new guy joined our team. And loh and behold, it was someone I had saved from a rather ignoble end to his new job while still on training for the job. The youngster had gotten drunk one night, gone to one of those legalised prostitute dens in Geylang, flashed his trainee temp warrant card and ordered the OKT to close shop. Ended up drunk and tossed into Central Station's lockup. As I was manning the dept's phone lines that night on station duty, I took pity on the recruit and decided to call the higher up's, so they can pull string and get him release.

Imagine my surprise a year latter when the same fellow turned up in my office and introduced himself as our new collegue. Of course, he didn't recognise me as he never saw me, but I recognised his lion mane of a hea of hair from his photo in the warrant card.

Another collegue, who was a VC at that time, told us that story while in the van on a raid, and I casually mentioned that I was the 'uncle' who took pity on the new guy to get him released from the lockup, and subsequently saved from being expelled from the force.

So about 2 weeks after he joined us, a few of us decided to do a proper welcome party for the guy.

Went to a pub near katong somewhere, and opened a half bottle of remy for him. Unknown to me, my collegue and this new guy wanted to sabo me for some reason. Maybe because he was in the lockup for a few hours before being released or something.(I called my seniors only 5 mins after being informed by the lockup, and verifying that he had the proper warrant). In any case, the other collegue decided he also had to buy another half bottle. Between the 3 of us, 2 half bottles wasn't much to worry about. But then the new guy upped the ante and opened a full bottle of remy. I was getting a bit high by then. Managed to finish off the bottle as well, and before I couldl even take a breath, a guy approached us with another full bottle in hand. He was the manager of the pub, and it turns out, a friend of our new guy. Turns out our new guy sidelines as an Ah long at toa payoh and the manager is one of his 'buddies' of the trade.

To cut to the chase, we started at 9pm, we finished at 2am, and we finished off all the bottles. I was seriously getting drunk, almost slurry, so I called a cab and went back home. Afterall, I had a full day of work starting at 9am. My fellow 2 collegues did not turn up for work that day.

It was 2 days later that I found out the new guy went to the hospital with the other collegue to have his stomach pumped. And that the two of them knew each other years ago and had hatched a plan to drink me under the table between them.

Go figure. Guess I was more than they could handle.
