Re: Understanding Vietnamese Life Partner
bro. Its difficult for me to explain to you about this `face value' of vietnamese with foreigner husband. Go stay with your gf in Vietnam in that `simple life' for 6 months or more continuously. In the eyes of vietnamese, or normal vietnamese, a foreigner shouldn't live their way. We singaporeans have been living a good life and we feel its nothing wrong to live the normal viet way, but for the normal vietnamese who has never live a good life before, a foreigner living that sort of life for a long time is `disgraceful'. visiting and staying long term is totally different. By the way, i don't think any of the yr group of samsters who are based in Vietnam are staying in a local run down house or room. But i guess u made it clear that `as long as i earn my sg salary', that's not as simple as the normal vietnamese already. try living simple with 2 or 3 million VND a month like a normal vietnamese, things will be totally different. One thing is for sure if you live like a normal vietnamese but is a foreigner, the ward Police will always find u trouble. hehhehe
When i first went Vietnam, i live a simple life like a normal vietnamese. For a period of time, i stayed with my wife in her rented room / house in a cosy neighbourhood of Binh Thanh. The looks and stare i get from the locals are numerous. Soon came a lot of gossips attacking my wife and i. There's even a male neighbour who told my wife to leave me to be with him as he says `how can a foreigner be so poor?' . With the rumours spreading, soon came the ward police to find me trouble. That period of time was tedious, real bad. That period of bad time taught me a lot and also taught me the importance of living a certain standard to gain respect amongst the vietnamese and to also network with the high ranking government officers of the city. Just sharing my 13,000 VND worth of views and experience, which is just worth S$1.. hehhehe |

Just hope he learned something about 'networking' with the ward police / high rank officer so that there will be no trouble for him. |

Re: Understanding Vietnamese Life Partner
This looking down exist not just in Vietnam but other countryside too. In Thailand, for example, I know one Brit guy, wh stay in countryside with his Thai wife and 2 kids. Never talk to any neighbours cause they like to compare this and that. Just compare it with an ang mo staying in a 2 room flat.
But frankly, who the fuck cares. Whoever going there, no. 1 is to make sure that you have enough money. For me, if I go there (VN), I stlll won't cut ties here, that is, maintain one property in Sin, etc. Can go there stay during winter and come back to Singapore, hee hee. So, how to get this long-term stay or PR ???, of course willing to pay. |

Re: Understanding Vietnamese Life Partner
By the way, it is illegal to stay in Vietnam's countryside without apply for a permit. Foreigners can only stay in hotel, at least in North Vietnam.

Re: Understanding Vietnamese Life Partner
Bros,
1 more question. Do you guys apply for LTSVP before your wife come to singapore or you wait until they came in on normal social visit pass then apply in person in singapore? Also, what is the living standard in VN? For a single person working adn living in rented room. i think renting room in cities is very common Poor = SGD 150? Normal = SGD 300? Rich = SGD 1000 and above? Last edited by qwerty78; 15-06-2008 at 11:20 AM. Reason: rephrase |

As for living standard in Vietnam, it depends on which part of vietnam u are in. In big cities like HCM and Hanoi, the standard of living is much higher than in the province. Rented accommodation comes in many different forms. The cheapest i have seen is one room with an attached toilet. There's no partition in the room. Around 1 year ago, that room was going for around 1 million VND, which is slightly less than S$100. But plus utilities, then it will surely surpass S$100 a month. But if its a foreigner renting the same room, price will surely be much higher ... Other types of accmmodation will again depend on size and the district its in. I think normal accommodation, u must change the SGD to USD. For the rich, its surely above US$1000 a month. If u have read the news, HCM's office space and housing rental is even higher than Singapore. |

I had my fair share of valuable experience with the local police....didnt spend one dong for all visits...just be steady and they cant do anything to you. But never challenge them...just be firm and ask your 'middle man' to settle all things for you the next day. Have a powerful 'insider' helps... anyhow, ward police or even district police has NO RIGHT to disturb a foreigner; unless they are given the proper authority. ONLY city police or the local CID has the right to confront a foreign the best way to avoid them is to stay in 'military wards' eg ton duc thang (navy). usually in these wards, the police will not go in to disturb the residents. |

Re: Understanding Vietnamese Life Partner
military wards are cluster of houses that house military personnel. the army, navy and air force each have their own areas. Eg. The areas opposite saigon super bowl belongs to the air force and the ton duc thang area belongs to the navy. The authority allots land for their officers to build their own houses. These houses are popular with foreigners.
in fact, in the very early days if u want to ta bao a girl when u are in the province, you should stay in a army guest house...100% no police raid i used to do that when i travel to mekong delta those were the days... |
