Indonesia affirms death penalty as a state`s sovereignity
Jakarta (ANTARA News)- The Indonesian government has affirmed that having the death penalty on its statute is part of the sovereignty of a state, according to a press statement issued by the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and received by ANTARA here on Friday. A joint statement regarding the death penalty was issued by the Ambassador of Indonesia to Austria, Slovenia, and the UN agencies in Vienna, Rachmat Budiman, after the ratification of the final document of the Special Session of the UN General Assembly on the Narcotics and Drug issues, in New York, USA. The ambassador asserted that the death penalty and the mode of its execution is part of the implementation of criminal justice system decided by competent authorities of each country. "There is no international law prohibiting the death penalty and its implementation. Every country has a sovereign right to determine its own political, legal, economic and social systems, corresponding to its interests and conditions," he said. Besides Indonesia, several like minded states have the same stance on death penalty as part of the legal system of sovereign states, including China, Singapore, Yemen, Malaysia, Brunei Darussalam, Pakistan, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Oman, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Iran and Sudan. The joint statement is very important to show that there are differences among countries on death penalty issue. Drug abuse is a serious problem in many countries. "In view of that, the death penalty is an important component in the criminal justice system that can be applied in case of a very serious drug related crime. The execution has to be in compliance with the principles of law and justice," Rachmat said. The United Nations General Assembly Special Session on the World Drug Problem is one of the main UN forums on narcotics and drugs issues, which was attended by 193 of the UN member states. The last special session on narcotics and drugs was held in 1998. According to the Indonesian Permanent Representative to the UN in New York, Ambassador Dian Triansyah Djani, the Special Session is very important for Indonesia. The forum can be used by the Indonesian government to deliver information about and explain to the international community the national policies and achievements in combating drug abuse. "The Indonesian government is very serious in addressing drug abuse. We are protecting our people from narcotics," Ambassador Djani said. |

The laughing Cock contest in Indonesia
A total of 187 chickens took part in a laughing contest during the exhibition of flora and fauna in Jakarta, Indonesia.
Contestants were divided into four categories; a category for novice chickens under the age of 1, a category for chickens with a routine or crowing sound, a category for chickens with a unique sound and a category for chickens and a category for chickens with low voices, and these chickens are seen as the most prestigious and most expensive (and can be sold for up to tens of thousands of US dollars!). |

Indonesian children are force to risk their lives crossing collapsed bridge to school
Children in Indonesia have been filmed risking their lives by crossing a collapsed suspension bridge to get to school. Three bridges in the district of Lebak have given way recently due to flooding.
When the 162m-long bridge that connected Ciwaru village to Sibagi village broke, school children were left with few alternatives for getting to lessons on time. Muhammad Ikhwan, a 10-year-old student, said he felt forced to choose crossing the collapsed bridge rather than walking 5km. "It's far if we don't use the bridge. Yes, it's about 5km to walk," he said. The bridge was built in 2004 and is the only access that connects the two villages over the Ciberang river. Residents have called for more action from the local government to repair the crossing. Five days on since floods damaged the suspension bridge, there has been little improvement. "We hope the government takes immediate action on this matter as this bridge is used for daily activities, especially school children as Ciwaru villages is far and this bridge is the nearest connection," Epi Suhaepi, a head of neighbouring village of Pasir Tanjung said. He said that some parents were worried about the conditions and safety of their children. |

Singaporean nabbed for smuggling drugs into Bali
Singaporean citizen Mohammad Noh Bin Abdul Salam was forced to cancel his 33th birthday party in Bali on Friday after Ngurah Rai Airport customs officers arrested him for bringing drugs onto the island. The cafe employee in Singapore was found to bring 10 ecstasy ( MDMA ) pills and some LSD in the form of "happy paper", which has been more widely known as "blotter acid" since the 1960s. The Bali Customs and Excise Office’s prosecution and investigation chief, Husni Syaiful, said Mohammad Noh was arrested upon his arrival at the airport via Malaysia on AirAsia flight AK 376 on Tuesday afternoon. He said it was the office's K-9 team that found something suspicious in Mohammad's luggage. "When we examined it, we found 10 MDMA pills and one piece of happy paper," Husni said in a press conference on Wednesday. Officers said Mohammad told the police he bought the drugs in Malaysia. "He said he was preparing the drugs for his birthday party in Bali," Ngurah Rai Customs and Excise Office head Budi Harjanto said. Budi claimed it was probable Mohammad Noh was not only a drug user, but also part of a drug ring that aimed to test the security in Bali airport. "He claimed he himself would use the drugs, but we still have to investigate his claims. He could be part of a drug ring," he said. Mohammad Noh will be charged with violating Article 113 of the 2009 Narcotics Law, which carries a maximum sentence of 15 years imprisonment and a Rp 10 billion ( US$757,289 ) fine. He was handed over to the police on Wednesday for further legal processing. |

Dial 112 for all emergency services, soon
The Indonesia government will launch a trial of an integrated emergency services number, 112, which will connect to hospitals, fire stations and police stations in 100 cities across the country, in the fourth quarter of this year. “The number 112 will be able to be dialed free of charge from a mobile phone. As long as you have a signal, you can dial the number and the operator will direct you [from there],” Communications and Information Minister Rudiantara said during a ceremony at the Regional Autonomy Institute in Jakarta on Tuesday. “It is going to be the same as the 911 service in the US. We chose 112 because it is an international emergency number that has long been the standard for the mobile technology industry.” Currently, Indonesia has different emergency numbers, including 110 for police, 113 for fire and 118 for ambulance services. Meanwhile, Rudiantara said that on Thursday he would meet with 100 mayors and Home Affairs Minister Tjahjo Kumolo to talk about the project. |
