Go-Jek to launch ride-hailing services in Vietnam
By Phan Anh June 26, 2018 | 04:30 pm GMT+7 Indonesia-based firm will first offer ride-hailing services in HCMC before expanding to other cities and provinces. Indonesian ride-hailing app Go-Jek will officially launch in Vietnam this July under the brand name of Go-Viet. The firm will be run by a group of Vietnamese managers. Go-Jek will provide Go-Viet with financial and technological backing, as well managerial inputs. "We believe that these in-country teams have the knowledge and experience to make the businesses in Vietnam a huge success," said Nadiem Makarim, Go-Jek CEO and founder. He said local teams will have in-depth knowledge and expertise to operate in Vietnamese market. The app would first offer ride-hailing and on-demand logistics services to customers in HCMC before expanding to other cities and provinces with food delivery and other services. The launch of Go-Viet in Vietnam is part of Go-Jek’s plan to expand to Southeast Asian markets, including Vietnam, Thailand, Singapore and Philippines. Founded in 2010, Go-Jek has raised over $1.5 billion from investors like Google and China’s Tencent Holdings, according to the Reuters. Starting out as a phone-based motorbike ride-hailing app, Go-Jek is now a digital platform which offers transportation, logistics and delivery services. Go-Jek isn’t the only firm vying for a spot in Vietnam’s transport market. Singapore based blockchain-powered ride-hailing app MVL is also on the verge of entering. Ever since Uber left Vietnam in April, Grab has dominated the local market, and authorities are investigating possible breaches of anti-trust laws.

Spending boom as foreign tourists linger longer in Saigon
By Nguyen Quy June 25, 2018 | 05:12 pm GMT+7 Foreign tourists spent $145 a day on average in Vietnam’s commercial hub last year. Ho Chi Minh City authorities are stepping up efforts to give foreigners more reason to extend their stay in Vietnam’s premier metropolis as they rake in higher tourism revenues. They are encouraged by the impressive rise in number of foreign arrivals in the city. In 2017, the city welcomed 6.36 million foreigners, up 22.8 percent against 2016. And the welcome news for the tourism sector is that they are staying longer and spending more. The results of a survey on the city’s tourism market, released on June 15, shows that international visitors spent $145 a day on average last year, equivalent to the amount they spent in 2016 in Thailand and well below that of Singapore ($254), Beijing ($242) and Taipei ($208), based on an official data from the Asia Pacific Destinations Index 2017 compiled by MasterCard. The corresponding amount for domestic tourists in Vietnam was $69.4. The survey was conducted by the city’s tourism department and the Statistics Bureau. The city of skyscrapers and French heritage buildings has plenty more to offer globetrotters, helping prolong their stay to 5.21 days on average, while locals only stay for 3.6 days, the survey showed. Up to 48 percent of the foreign tourists surveyed said they spent four to seven days exploring the city, and 40 percent stayed for up to eight days. Last year, the city's tourism authorities stepped up efforts to have foreign visitors stay on for longer, launching a range of attractive events. Most notably, Bui Vien Street, the city's most popular backpacker hangout, was turned into a walking zone on weekend nights. Mutiple entertainment activities were also held here. In addition, the city's first river bus tour officially opened to traffic in late November, connecting Bach Dang Wharf in District 1 and Linh Dong Station in Thu Duc District, passing through District 2 and Binh Thanh District. While the city is beset with the problems of traffic chaos and street crime, it has proved to a very popular destination with something special for everyone. It was named one of the friendliest destinations for solo travelers earlier last year by Airbnb, while top U.S. lifestyle magazine Food and Wine named it an ideal place for retiree travelers. Price of Travel, a travel cost database, in 2017 ranked HCMC the world’s third cheapest city, where backpackers only need $18.33 a day for meals, beer, a place to stay, public transport and an entrance fee to a top attraction. The U.K. respected travel site Rough Guides last April released a list of eight best night experiences in Southeast Asia, and Ho Chi Minh City was named the place to go for a good nightlife experience.

Sexy female host in bikini ‘seals’ a World Cup spot
By Nguyen Nguyen June 27, 2018 | 08:17 am GMT+7 Female host Thu Hang wearing bikini in a World Cup prediction show on pay TV. Photo captured from K+ video on Facebook Pay TV channel says the comely presenter wore a skimpy swimsuit to familiarize herself with fortune-telling seal. Thu Hang speaks confidently about the upcoming soccer match of the day. Then she turns to the real star of the show, Molly the seal, to predict its outcome. Molly the seal is an old hand at this. She looks at the three baskets placed in front of her. The one in the middle has a white flag and the flanking baskets carry the flags of the teams playing the match. Using her divining power, the seal seals the deal by throwing a ball into one of the three baskets. The “Russian Prophet” show, aired at 11:30 a.m. on pay TV channel K+ Sports News, has attracted many viewers. The sexy host is one of the attractions of the show, because she wears a bikini and a see-through white cloth that accentuates her curves. However, it was not long before the skimpy nature of Hang’s outfit became “controversial." The show is streamed live on the TV channel's Facebook page, and posts with Hang wearing bikinis last week received much more interactions than those with her in normal coach outfits. Views for the posts increased five times and comments 10 times. Many viewers said the bikini touch has made the sports program less serious and more fun to watch. “I don’t really care about the seal, but I like the host’s outfit,” a viewer commented on the channel's Facebook page. "I'm here for the MC, I don't care about the results," another said. But many dismissed the bikini as a click-bait trick, which took attention away from the world's most important football event. Some said they thought they accidentally turned on a erotic site and it was not suitable to show such outfit on a program for general viewers. A representative from the TV channel told local media that as the show was shot in a pool, the host was wearing a swimsuit so she could familiarize herself with the seals. Thu Hang is an experienced host who has been doing many sport shows for the channel before, not someone just hired for the job, the representative said. A screenshot from a Facebook video shows female host Thu Hang wearing a more appropriate swimsuit after her bikini outfit raised controversy. However, the channel seems to have listened to its viewers. Thu Hang was wearing a more “appropriate” swimsuit starting Sunday, her body covered completely from the neck down. Earlier, Vietnam television also attracted debates when female MCs showed up in World Cup programs in clothes showing off their breasts, leading discussions before and after matches. What bothered die-hard fans were the women did not hold adequate soccer knowledge for the job, with some of their comments being laughed off as "silly." Feminists said that parading women in thin outfit and making them look stupid is disrespectful.
