8 Filipino women rescued in nightclub raid
KUALA LUMPUR - Eight Filipino women believed to be victims of a human trafficking syndicate were rescued during a raid at a nightclub in Bandar Sunway near here early Saturday. Supt Maszely Minhad, from Bukit Aman's secret society, anti-vice and gaming division, said acting on information and intelligence, the police along with the Anti-Trafficking in Persons Unit of the Immigration Department and Customs raided the nightclub at 1am. "We saved eight Filipino women aged between 21 and 31 and arrested a Myanmar man and a Filipino woman, who are believed to be members of the syndicate. "We also picked up four Myanmar women under the Immigration Act for misuse of work permits," he told reporters at the scene. Maszely said a follow-up raid was carried out at a house in Taman Wawasan, Puchong, where two more Filipino women were saved while a taxi driver and a Filipino female pimp were arrested. The police believe Africans and Filipinos are behind the syndicate soliciting the women for Africans in the country, he said, adding that 27 Filipino women were rescued so far this year while four pimps were arrested. Meanwhile, a 37-year-old technician, who was believed to be involved in a World Cup football gambling syndicate, was picked up in a raid at his house in Taman Puchong Jaya near here Friday night. The man was picked by a team lead by ASP Mazlan Hassan while busy surfing a betting website. The police seized RM400, two laptops and betting slips from the suspect, who claimed that he lost RM3,000 in the betting. The man's wife and two children were in the house when the police moved in. — Bernama
