tiec = I feel sorry 遺憾
ngon ngu = language

Just tell her. "Noi it lam nhieu cung vui". (Speak little but do a lot also happy) Surely she will laugh.

Believe it or not. I learn most of my tieng viet from this forum starting 1 & 1/2 year ago. There is a lot of useful information here which allows you to learn tieng viet step by step. However, you must be patient enough to read from page one.

Here is a link to some basic tieng viet lessons which you may find helpful. This website was introduced by someone else on this thread before.

It's a collection of some of the most commonly used words / phrase used in sms by the girls. When I started visiting V pubs, I kept a copy of it in my iphone and it's really help a lot when trying to decipher those SMSes by VBs. Of course, my list is bigger now, but for starting, that post by jack will help a lot.

The funny chart you referred to is called "dấu" in Vietnamese. Without it, the meanings of some words become ambiguous. For example, troi can be

trôi : to drift
trời : weather
trói : rope

However, with some context and experiences, it is not hard to guess the meaning of a word without "dấu"
