Saha ruled out of Roma clash

Louis Saha has been ruled out of Manchester United's Champions League quarter-final decider against AS Roma with a hamstring injury.

The Frenchman's only appearance in the last month was as a late substitute in the first leg in the Olympic Stadium and had been expected to play more of a part in the return leg at Old Trafford on Tuesday.

However, Saha suffered a recurrence of his injury in training ahead of Saturday's Premiership defeat to Portsmouth at Fratton Park and Sir Alex Ferguson, the United manager, feels it is not worth risking him, despite his side needing to overcome a one goal deficit.

"We have to err on the side of caution," Ferguson said. "There is no point bringing someone back who is not 100 per cent fit and risk further injury."

United will also be without suspended midfielder Paul Scholes, plus long-term absentees Gary Neville (ankle), Nemanja Vidic (collarbone) and Mikael Silvestre (shoulder). Ji-sung Park is also ruled out for at least a fortnight after suffering a knee injury in the win over Blackburn on March 31.

"We are still assessing Ji-sung to see what we do next with him," Ferguson said. "Hopefully the news will be good and he will only be out for a couple of weeks."

ROONEY PINS HOPES ON RONALDO

Wayne Rooney has hailed Manchester United team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo as "by far the best player in the world".

At the World Cup last summer, the young duo famously clashed during England's World Cup quarter-final defeat by Portugal.

Many pundits, and some senior figures among Rooney's international colleagues, were unhappy at Ronaldo's part in his club-mate's dismissal in Gelsenkirchen.

Although he admitted afterwards he was disappointed with Ronaldo's conduct, Rooney was quick to forgive the winger and happy to put the past to one side in a combined effort to bring glory to Old Trafford.

Yet Rooney can hardly have expected to be shunted into the shade quite as much as he has been by Ronaldo this term.

The £27million forward may have broken a 17-game Champions League drought with his goal in Rome last week. But, as injury-hit United look to overturn Roma's 2-1 advantage in Tuesday night's quarter-final decider at Old Trafford, there is no doubt who the home supporters will be pinning most of their hopes on.

"At the minute, Cristiano is by far the best player in the world," said Rooney.

"He performances have been unbelievable. He is winning games on his own this season. He has been unbelievable.

"Hopefully he can work some of his magic and get us into the semi-finals."

Rooney's praise is confirmation, if it were needed, of Ronaldo's remarkable reaction to the adverse publicity he received on the back of England's exit in Germany, which looked certain at one stage to drive him out of Old Trafford for good.

Amazingly though, he is yet to score at all for United on the biggest club stage of all.

His talent is not in question, given the regularity with which he appears on the scoresheet for both club and country, but how United could do with the 22-year-old adding to his 16 Premiership goals against Roma given the difficulty of the task awaiting them.

Five times in Champions League history United have attempted to overturn a first-leg deficit in knockout combat, and five times they have failed.

The latest occasion came against AC Milan three years ago, when Rooney and Ronaldo were both involved, but too raw and inexperienced to have any kind of influence on the overall outcome.

"We were still young and trying to learn the game," said Rooney.

"Playing against the likes of (Paolo) Maldini and (Alessandro) Nesta gives you a good platform to learn from. I feel we have both improved as players since then, and matured a lot."

With Gary Neville, Nemanja Vidic, Park Ji-sung and Louis Saha missing through injury, and Paul Scholes suspended following his needless red card in the Stadio Olimpico, Rooney and Ronaldo will certainly need to rise to the occasion if United are to book a semi-final meeting with either Milan or Bayern Munich.

Rooney's goal at least gives United heart, especially after producing such a battling performance during a game when they were down to 10 men for almost an hour.

"There has been a lot of talk about the fact I have not scored for a while in the Champions League," said Rooney.

"Hopefully now the talking will stop and I can concentrate on trying to get more goals.

"I don't know why I had not scored. I have had chances. Maybe I should have scored on some occasions, on others the keeper has made good saves. But obviously, it is a relief to finally get the goal."

The fatigue lingering from that effort in Italy was shown at Fratton Park on Saturday, when the Red Devils crashed to a defeat which raised major question marks over their ability to hold off Chelsea on the six-game Barclays Premiership title run-in.

United's current lengthy injury list hardly helps dispel those fears.

Rooney, though, believes there is more than enough talent within the Old Trafford dressing room to ensure a positive and forceful response to the end of an unbeaten run stretching back to the loss at Arsenal in the middle of January.

"It is important the reaction from the weekend is a positive one," he said.

"We are disappointed with the weekend result but this is a different tournament.

"We have played well all season and we don't want to let ourselves down now."

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson insists Roma fans will be safe when they visit Old Trafford for Tuesday's Champions League clash.

The quarter-final first leg meeting between the clubs in Rome last Wednesday was marred by crowd trouble inside and outside the stadium, prompting United to complain about the treatment of their supporters at the hands of Italian police.

But while Ferguson admitted he was "appalled" by what he saw, he insisted there would be no repeat in Manchester.

"We missed a lot of what was shown on here but there have been one or two photographs I've seen since then and it doesn't look very nice at all," he added.

"I think everyone was appalled at some of the pictures and I think UEFA are investigating so we will await their findings. We hope it's a thorough investigation because that's the only way you can find these things out.

"I don't anticipate any further problems. I think the security at Old Trafford is fantastic and I don't think the Roma fans will have any problems at all. There has never been a history of that, the security and police are excellent and the Roma fans should have nothing to fear."

Wayne Rooney believes Cristiano Ronaldo is currently the best player in the world and identified the winger as the key to United's hopes of progressing.

The Italian club will visit Old Trafford having established a slender 2-1 advantage.

But United striker Rooney is convinced his colleagues are capable of shedding an unwanted club record by overturning a first-leg deficit for the first time ever in the Champions League.

Ferguson's side have exited the competition on each of the five previous occasions they have trailed at the halfway stage of a tie, most recently when they went out to AC Milan two seasons ago.

Rooney admits United will once again face a stern test against Italian opposition but claims his Portugese team-mate Ronaldo is capable of turning the tie on his own.

"When we faced AC Milan a couple of years ago, myself, Cristiano and a couple of the other players were still really young and we were still trying to learn the game and get experience," he said.

"It's different playing against Italian teams, it's like a game of chess really, the game's slower and it's a lot more organised. Here the game's a lot quicker and there is a lot more end to end stuff.

"I've only really faced Italian defences twice, against Roma last week and against AC Milan but with our players and the speed we have, especially at Old Trafford, if we play the way we can do we can cause them problems.

"I think since the Milan game, both me and Cristiano have improved as players and we have matured a lot, especially Critiano who has been winning games on his own.

"This season he has been unbelievable and at the moment he is by far the best player in the world and hopefully he can work some of his magic and get us into the semi-finals."

The defeat in Rome was followed last weekend by a Premiership reverse against Portsmouth that boosted the domestic title hopes of United's main rivals Chelseas.

But Ferguson has denied that the back-to-back losses have increased the pressure on his side and repeated his claim that Rooney's away goal in Rome has put United on top in the tie, even though midfielder Paul Scholes will be missing through suspension.

"I think we are in a good position," the manager said. "Our attacking impetus will be much stronger and more apparent but of course we need to perform well and take our chances.

"Of course we will make chances tomorrow but my experience in some European games is that we have sometimes missed chances, particularly in the two semi-final ties here. So if we can create the chances and take a percentage then I think we have a massive chance."

Louis Saha will join Scholes on the sidelines after failing to recover from a hamstring injury, although Patrice Evra could return to the back-four.

DON'T MEST IT UP

GARY NEVILLE has called on his Manchester United team-mates to beat Roma tonight and make up for their "criminal" Champions League failures of the past.

United skipper Neville believes Sir Alex Ferguson's side should have won more than one European Cup during the Scot's 20-year reign and has told them they must deliver this year.

Neville also said it was "unacceptable" that United had failed to win the Premiership since 2003 and insisted they cannot afford to blow their chance this season and hand the title to Chelsea.

"There have been two or three seasons in Europe where we haven't performed as players," said Neville. "Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen - criminal, criminal those two.

"We should have been in the final those two years but were guilty of not performing, not taking our chances. There are also a number of clubs in Europe who have the history and tradition of United.

"Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Juventus and AC Milan, we have to respect them. These clubs in their own country are huge clubs with massive tradition.

"I'd always say United is the biggest club but even the most ardent United fans would recognise the size of these clubs and know they are massive.

"They all have the same ambition, they all want the same thing but they don't win it five or 10 times, apart from Real Madrid who have won it nine times.

"Since it has been the Champions League, Real Madrid have won it twice and Bayern Munich once. It's a hard competition to win."

Neville blamed United's 26-year wait to land their first Premiership title for their failure to match the European success of arch-rivals Liverpool, who have lifted the European Cup five times.

"Had United won leagues during the 1970s and 80s we would have won European Cups," said Neville. "But we didn't win leagues because to be honest there was a team 40 miles away (Liverpool) who won it every year.

"This club allowed that to happen for some reason, 26 years without winning the league. I'm not putting pressure on us as a group of players here now but three years is unacceptable.

"Three years is well beyond the period that is acceptable for me, 26 years is just absolutely ridiculous. It's unthinkable, it should never happen at this club."

Neville, who misses tonight's quarter-final tie through injury, was a member of United's Treble-winning squad of 1999 but claimed a repeat of that success this season is highly unlikely.

"I said after 1999 that I never thought it would be done again, just because I experienced what happened then," said Neville. "Every season since there's been a team in that position.

"Chelsea can still win the Quadruple, Arsenal could have won the Treble one season and last season Chelsea were still in most competitions until the fifth or sixth round or the semi-finals.

"Everything just has to go your way - everything. You need an extreme amount of luck. Not just determination, winning 1-0, you need luck, genuine luck.

"We won some of those games and you couldn't explain in words what happened.

We did all the right things, we prepared well, we worked hard and we had a great spirit. But you need an extreme amount of luck and I still think it's going to be extremely difficult to achieve, so talk of it at this stage is really premature."

Totti may never have fully delivered on his superstar billing on the world or European stage and he was well shackled in the first leg. But he remains Roma's captain and his passing and shooting make him a constant threat to the United defence.

Cassetti is an attack-minded rightback but has been pressed on to the left side due to the absence of leftback Max Tonetto. He must be wary of Cristiano Ronaldo's tendency to swap from left to right and back again with Ryan Giggs.

Chivu was accused of being at the centre of Paul Scholes' sending-off in Rome. He has forged a good partnership with Philippe Mexes and has coped well with wearing a protective mask after a nose injury.

Ferguson backs keeper Van der Sar

Sir Alex Ferguson has given his backing to keeper Edwin van der Sar ahead of Manchester United's Champions League quarter-final second leg against Roma.

Van der Sar's errors contributed to United's defeat in the first leg as well as Saturday's loss to Portsmouth.

"Edwin has the experience. He knows how to deal with it," said the United boss, whose side are 2-1 down against Roma.

"You don't get 120 caps for your country without being able to handle situations like that. He'll be OK."

Van der Sar has not been helped by playing behind an unsettled back four as United struggle with injuries.

Captain Gary Neville and central defender Nemanja Vidic will once again be missing against Roma on Tuesday.

However, Ferguson remains confident that United can come through - especially with the backing of the Old Trafford crowd.

"Over the years, all the great sides have been here and the atmosphere has always been fantastic," he said. "We expect that again tomorrow.

"I loved the atmosphere in Rome. I could play those games every week.

"Hopefully our fans can repeat that kind of noise and we will be OK because the players have proved they have the character to meet this kind of challenge."

Ferguson demands that vital chances are taken

Afflicted suddenly by a dip in his team's form and the loss of key players, Sir Alex Ferguson yesterday warned his patched-up Manchester United side that they must demonstrate more ruthlessness in front of goal if they are to avoid a Champions League exit against AS Roma tonight.
Dismissing any suggestions that his side are under pressure following the weekend league defeat at Portsmouth, however, Ferguson remained upbeat about United's prospects against the Serie A side. An invaluable away goal in the 2-1 defeat in the Stadio Olimpico last Wednesday will, the manager believes, prove crucial as United attempt to extend their interest on three fronts.

To do that, though, Ferguson's side must shed their unwanted record of never having overcome a first-leg deficit in this competition. Disappointment has followed on each of the five occasions United have entered the second leg in arrears, most recently against Milan two seasons ago, and while the manager predictably rejected the statistic as a cause for concern, United's chances of ending the run and reaching the semi-finals have certainly not been made any easier by the loss of Louis Saha and Paul Scholes.
Ferguson confirmed Saha had failed to recover from a hamstring injury picked up in training last Friday, but it is the absence of Paul Scholes, sent off in the first leg, that will be more keenly felt tonight at Old Trafford.

"Of course we will make chances, but my experience in some European games is that we have sometimes missed chances, particularly in the two semi-final ties [against Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Dortmund] here," Ferguson said. "So if we can create the chances and take a percentage then I think we have a massive chance.

"I think we are in a good position. We are pleased we scored after going down to 10 men in Rome and when we did score they became very nervous. Our attacking impetus will be much stronger and more apparent but of course we need to perform well and take our chances."

Francesco Totti last night said the clash with United is more important than the World Cup final. "As a Roma supporter this game is more important to me than the World Cup final was," the player said.

Roma's coach Luciano Spalletti will make a late decision on the forward's fitness ahead of the return leg after the player arrived in England struggling to overcome a hamstring strain. It is widely anticipated the Italian World Cup winner will feature against United at some time tonight but Spalletti insists the injury is giving cause for concern. "I need to see him in training and check on him," he said.

Providing Totti makes it Roma may show just one change tonight. With the Ashton-born Simone Perrotta suspended an immediate recall is expected for the Chile international David Pizarro, who was himself banned for the first leg. Mindful of the threat offered by Spalletti's side, who lie second in Serie A, Ferguson was keen to put his team's recent problems into perspective.

"I don't think it is any more tense than any other European tie," he added. "Certainly no different to when the great Juventus teams came here or when Milan came here two or three years ago. We have been at this stage many times. Losing a game is not an unusual factor in football, everyone loses at some time. It's what you do about it that makes your team and I am confident about that."

Rooney's goal in Rome last week, his first in the Champions League for almost three seasons, could hardly have been better timed. The England striker, though, believes it is Cristiano Ronaldo who will carry United hopes, describing his Portugese team-mate as the best player in the world and insisting the pair have matured since the tame defeat by Milan in 2005.

Jose backs United for title boost

Jose Mourinho wants Manchester United to overcome AS Roma and book their place in the semi-finals of the Champions League because he believes it could boost the Blues' hopes of sealing a Premiership title hat-trick.

Mourinho's men cranked up the heat on the Red Devils during the Easter weekend as they moved to within just three points of the leaders following their 1-0 win over Tottenham at Stamford Bridge.

And the Portuguese believes a continued run in Europe would put Sir Alex Ferguson's resources under yet more pressure as the domestic title race reaches its climax.

Speaking ahead of Chelsea's Champions League quarter-final second leg clash with Valencia, he said: "I have two big matches to play before I go back to the Premiership - Valencia in the Champions League and Blackburn in the semi-final of the FA Cup.

"So I don't want to spend my time, energy and focus on the Premiership. The only thing I can say is that tonight - and it is with no disrespect to Roma, I have nothing against them or Italian clubs - but I would love Manchester United to win.

"I would love them to progress to the semi-finals. Why? Because I want them to play in the semi-finals - it is two more matches for them."

Deschamps: Ron will win prize

Didier Deschamps believes Cristiano Ronaldo will one day win the European Player of the Year award.

The Juventus coach says the Manchester United winger is one of the hottest properties in world football at the moment.

The Portuguese ace has scored 18 goals and has been one of the main reasons for United's assault on the Premiership, UEFA Champions League and FA Cup this term.

But it is his changed attitude which Deschamps feels will earn him the coveted Ballon d'Or prize at some point in his career.

"He doesn't waste possession and he has stopped his cheating attitude," Deschamps told RMC.

"Without doubt he is a potential future Ballon d'Or winner."

Majestic Man United thrash Roma 7-1 to reach semi-finals

MANCHESTER, England April 10 (Reuters) - Manchester United produced one of their finest ever performances in European competition to overwhelm AS Roma 7-1 on Tuesday night and reach the semi-finals of the Champions League for the first time since 2002.

United, trailing 2-1 from the first meeting in Rome, had never previously overturned a first leg deficit in five attempts in the competition but did so in remarkable style to win the tie 8-3 on aggregate.

Three goals in a scintillating eight-minute burst early in the first half swept Alex Ferguson's side towards the semi-finals to face either Bayern Munich or AC Milan and sustained United's hopes of repeating their 1999 European and domestic treble.

Michael Carrick opened the scoring in the 11th-minute and further sweeping moves led to goals from Alan Smith (17th) and Wayne Rooney (19th) before Cristiano Ronaldo (44th and 49th) scored either side of the break.

Michael Carrick (60th) then netted a spectacular sixth and even though Daniele De Rossi pulled a goal back for Roma after 69 minutes, substitute Patrice Evra had the final word for United with their seventh goal nine minutes from time.

Sir Alex Ferguson believes Manchester United's 7-1 Champions League demolition of Roma proves they have the strength to win the treble.

Ferguson's side produced what he claimed was the greatest European performance he had ever seen at Old Trafford as they advanced to the semi-finals with a stunning display on Tuesday.

United trailed 2-1 from the quarter-final first leg, but they blew Roma away with three goals in seven minutes early in the first half and went on to record their biggest win of the season.

The Premiership leaders' breath-taking display clinched an 8-3 aggregate victory and set up a semi-final meeting with either AC Milan or Bayern Munich - their first appearance in the last four since 2002.

After successive defeats to Roma and Portsmouth last week, United looked as though they were crumbling under the weight of injuries to Gary Neville, Nemanja Vidic and Louis Saha, but they produced the perfect response against the Italians.

Now they will go into the decisive final weeks of the season with renewed belief and Ferguson is adamant he has a squad with enough strength in depth to emulate his 1999 team's treble-winning achievement.

"In a European sense it is my greatest night here. You never expect a scoreline like 7-1. But saying that the quality of our game was so high that once we scored two or three you felt we were going to do something big here.

"I think it was a special night. Hopefully it's not a one-off, but certainly the number of goals and the quality of them, it's difficult to think you are going to get that again.

"I said some months ago that the key to success at our club are the ones sitting on the bench.

"The players that have come in have responded to the challenge and I don't think they have looked out of place. We looked like men tonight.

"That is the kind of quality we have. It is difficult to lose two games at a club like this but we are able to respond to that pressure.

I think they have to win something and hopefully they can do that. The way they are playing and enjoying their football they deserve it. But we have come to the part of the season where every match is a test. There are big games all the time and hopefully they can get through all that."

United were in the kind of mood that can make them one of the most exciting teams in Europe. Their slick passing and finely-honed movement destroyed Roma during an amazing opening period.

Michael Carrick opened the scoring in the 12th minute with a superb long range effort and Alan Smith got the second five minutes later with a perfectly-placed strike.

Wayne Rooney turned in Ryan Giggs's 19th minute cross to send Old Trafford wild and put United firmly in control of the tie.

United were determined to savour their dominance and Ronaldo fired in their fourth just before half time. The Portuguese winger was in typically brilliant form and added his second when he turned in Giggs's cross after 49 minutes.

But the hosts weren't finished there. Carrick made it six with another superb 25-yard strike and, after Daniele De Rossi pulled one back for Roma, Patrice Evra completed the humiliation with an 81st minute drive to seal United's biggest ever Champions League victory.

Ferguson was delighted to see Smith get his first goal since November 2005 after his long battle with leg and ankle injuries and he said: "I think everyone is pleased for Alan. His enthusiasm spreads through the team. The great quality he has had in the last year is patience. He has kept going and going and has got his reward tonight.

"I just think the early goal was difficult for Roma because it gave us the advantage and put them on the back foot. It gave us the confidence to get at them and the speed of our play caused them a lot of problems after that."

Roma's defeat was the heaviest suffered by an Italian side since Juventus lost 7-0 against Vienna in 1958 and coach Luciano Spalletti admitted he was shell-shocked by the result.

"No-one imagined this performance," Spalletti said. "We suffered from a lack of experience.

"The first goal changed the face of the game. We lost our shape and played into their hands. We have played many good matches this season but we got it badly wrong tonight.

"We made a lot of mistakes and got punished heavily for them. We ended up chasing the game."

Hahaha... the ardent fan who wanted live matches of Serie A shown. IMO, the EPL has gone a long way. It used to be that Italian and Spanish leagues are more exciting.... but it has been overtaken by the EPL to a "certain degree".

The last time Man Utd trash a European team with that scoreline is against Irish minnows Waterford (who???) in 1968.

So, now SAF will also ask the same question.. Francesco who????? Tootsie??

Yes, Smith was fantastic last night, scoring his first goal since that horrific injury. He even finished the match in midfield after Carrick was rested.

Fletcher played damn well too. Tireless running in the midfield and breaking Roma's rhythm. Let's hope these fringe players will continue to perform when called into action for EPL.

Overall it was an awesome display by the team. The movements and, definitely, the clinical finishes must have pleased Sir Alex.
