Dawn's phone started ringing.

And it was a familiar number.

A number that she feared. A call that could most potentially be bad news.

Her face changed as she took the call.

And her tears started dripping.

Dawn: Mary, I have to go. It's urgent.

Mary: Ok ok. Go. Take care my dear. Let me know if I can help.

Dawn ran off quickly.

Snow was sound asleep in my arms. It felt really good to have a naked girl beside you. But I wished the one would be Dawn.

Suddenly Snow's phone rang. It should be a message.

Who could have messaged her in the middle of the night?

I know it's not right to invade her privacy, but I thought maybe it's Dawn.

I crept towards her phone and could see the message. She has no key lock.

Dawn: Sis, it's bad. Really bad. Can you help me... helpppppp.

Dawn wrote where she was and now I was in a total loss.

What should I do now?

Wake her up and tell her I heard her phone ring or rush down to where she is?

I scratched my head. Not knowing what to do.

King smiled sheepishly as he took a puff.

King: You think I do not dare touch you? Bitch. All woman are the same. Irregardless of who, you all still love my dick.

He spat at her. Gave her a kick on the stomach until he was satisfied.

He pulled up his pants, brushed away the cigarette ash and turned.

"You have not paid.."

King: Money? Here you go.

He said as he pushed the lighted cigarette on her arms and laughed as he saw her shriek in pain.

King: Why do I have to pay for sluts like you?

He said as he slapped her hard. She lost her balance, fell and hit her head on a beer bottle.

She wanted to get him to pay but what she saw was a blackout. And there was blood on the floor.

King took out another cigarette, turned and walked away.

I was at a loss now.

But my intuition told me to wake Snow up. I put the phone back, pretended to go to the toilet and flushed, hoping the loud sound would wake Snow up.

Nothing happened.

Me: Snow? I think I heard your phone ring.

Nothing happened.

Sharks. Now I was getting nervous.

Why am I to do?

Me: Snow? Snow?

I shook her.

And there was no response either.

Me: Snow?

She flipped and I was happy but all she did was go back to sleep.

Me: Why do you sleep like a log?

I shook my head. And decided that probably I should go and have a look.

Dressed up, and left the hotel.

I wrote a note on the table.

Me: Snow, I got something on. Will try to be back soon.

Luckily for me, there were ample cabs outside as I hailed.

I went into the hospital, searching for Dawn.

As I wasn't very good with signs, it took me a while to find where she was.

I walked as quietly as possible, hoping that I do not give her a shock.

My heart was thumping when I got near.

The door was ajar as I peeped in the room.

And there she was.

Weeping.

My heart sank too seeing her in this state.

I feel like walking over but I knew it would be foolish to do so. I could only quietly look at her from a distance.

It felt weird, it's as though she knew someone was looking at her.

Dawn looked up and I swore she must have since a glimpse of my face before I pretended to walk away.

My heart nearly stopped when I met her gaze.

I took the room number and headed back to the hotel.

Me: Probably a bouquet of flowers might be just appropriate, I thought to myself.

Snow was still asleep when I returned. She was still sleeping on the same position.

I took a quick shower, leaving the door slightly open.

There were a lot of thoughts in my mind.

Was Dawn alright? Why was she there? How can I get her attention? How can I send a bouquet of flowers? Would she know it's from me? What would be her reaction? Surprised? Touched? Absurd?

Arrgh!

I let the gushing waters wash my head, hoping it would wash my thoughts away.

Thoughts of Dawn came to mind.

I wanted to scratch my head so much that it bled, to get the thoughts away but I can't. I closed my eyes, hoping for a way that I could comfort Dawn in every way I can.

The heat from the showers made the entire bathroom foggy. It felt good to have the warm water gushing the top of your head.

Suddenly I could feel a pair of hands embracing me tightly from the back. Her head pinned against my back.

Snow: Please don't leave me alone. Again. Please.

Mary: Oh my god... what happened?

Mary said as she saw the burnt wound and bruises all over. She looked at her, her ribcage might have been broken.

Mary: Poor child... tell me..who did this to you?

Mary was furious.

Mary: Fucker King. I promise you are going to pay dearly for what you have done. You motherfucker. You don't treat us as your playtoys.

Mary said as she dialled a number that she had never called in a long time.

What Snow did shocked me.

Snow: Please don't leave me.

What was I supposed to do?

Snow wrapped her hands around me: I can do anything. Please. Just don't leave me.

I did not utter a word, all I could do is to let her finish her talk and settle down first.

Me: I'm at a loss for words Snow. I...

I turned off the tap and dried each other before going out.

Me: I'm not sure about my feelings Snow. Give me time.

Snow nodded as she knew she was far too emotional.

I looked at her.

Me: Could you tell me about Dawn please?

I know it was not a good time but this was the only way I can know more about Dawn.

Her face changed as she spoke.

Snow: Did you see the message?

Me: Message?

Snow: Then why did you go out?

Me: I went out to finish some work in my office for a while.

She suddenly calmed down. I could not be telling her I peeped at her phone.

Snow: Dawn's father is in the hospital for a while already. Her mother recently had an affair and had brought her son along with her. Leaving her dad with Dawn. Dawn's mum told his dad about her affair; about how rich he was and how he wants to marry her and he doesn't mind the son with him. She took the divorce papers, forcing her dad to sign it. They had flew off already, leaving the poor Dawn with debts and her dad's hospitalisation fees. Her dad suffered a stroke and his conditions were bad.

I stood frozen.

Was this true? Although it seems almost unreal where this only happens in movies.

Me: So she's alone now?

Snow: Yes. Now she's just living in Mary's place, a rented house. Her mother was evil, she sold the flat, took the money and left, she knew her husband would not be able to do anything in his state. I wanted Dawn to move in with me but my room is too small. I'm already living in a room with six occupied beds. And I can't squeeze in one more.

Me: I understand.

I didn't know Dawn was in such a bad shape now.

She must have been quite a looker at her younger days. She say on the chair, with one of her legs on the chair.

In a distance, a middle aged man wearing a white singlet and a pair of black pants, buckled with a huge belt came walking fast. He was heavily tattooed all over. Bald with a tattoo head, and there was a huge scar on the side of his face. Behind him were some men, dressed in a similar style.

He dragged a chair and then took a beer bottle and drank instantly.

Seng: Big sis? Call me for what? I'm busy you know?

Mary: Someone touched my girl and wants to go away for free. Even injuring her very badly.

Seng: Phua bye! Who is it? KNN tell me? CBB. Tell me I settle this for you? Limpeh sure get back money for you.

Mary: I don't want the money.

We left the hotel, doing nothing.

Snow acted as though nothing had happened as she said goodbye to me.

I headed back to my home, headed to my sculpture, took out the huge cloth and continued my own personal sculpture. This was already the third and I was happy with it.

I continued chiselling, driving the last portion of the masterpiece. They were all carefully lined up. I climbed up, to work on the details when suddenly there was a pain on my nose. And I started to get a nose bleed. I dropped the chisel and hammer as I held on my nose. Trying to stop the bleeding.

A honk was heard from outside as I held on my nose and walked out.

There was Alex. Tanned and well built, and his body was covered with 80% of tattoos.

Alex: Hey Max! Everything ok? Oh wait. Is that blood?

Me: It's fine. It will stop in a while. I get this all the time.

Alex: You sure? Want me to bring you to the doctor?

Me: It's fine. Let's talk in the living room.

I discussed in detail of what I thought and felt.

Our fist touched each others as we said goodbye.

I took a rest and thought it would be a good time to stop first.

I went to my sketchbook as I wrote my day's journal.

And perhaps it would be a good time to go to the hospital to visit Dawn.

Secretly.

I dressed myself and left for the hospital, grabbing a bouquet of flowers from the ground floor. And headed up.

There was no sign of Dawn there as I walked into the ward. A 6 bedder, I could memorise where she was as I walked over.

She was not there. But the one who laid there was a thin and frail man, with tubes all over his body. He turned his head slowly, with difficulty before he looked at me.

I looked at him and the words slipped out of my mouth.

Me: Are you Dawn's father?

He looked at me and tears began to fall as he nodded weakly. He tried to speak slowly.

Dawn's dad: Youuu areee?

Me: Just a friend uncle. You can call me Max. How are you feeling today?

Her dad shook his head.

DD: I'mmmmm bürden... Dawn.... no money.... me... useless...

Me: Don't say that uncle. She loves you. You meant the world to her.

DD: ... I...want... die...

Me: No you won't uncle... I will make sure of that...

I did not know why but I held his hand and assured him of that.

Me: If it's about money. Don't worry about it.

He gave me a puzzled look as he shook his head.

DD: Useless... old....

Out of curiosity, I saw a nurse going round for inspection. I raised my hands as she walked towards my direction.

Me: Can I talk to you a bit?

The nurse nodded as we went out to talk.

Me: How is the condition of uncle?

Nurse: How are you related to him?

Me: I'm his daughter's boyfriend.

Nurse: Are you sure?

Me: Yes. Cause we just started.

Nurse: I see. What do you want to know about him?

Me: About his condition and how he can be treated.

Nurse sighs: Uncle needs to go for a major operation. He has been delaying it. It's not looking good. He kept saying he's a burden. But I know. Poor daughter had to work for his bills.

Me: Can I pay for his bills? But could you do me a favour?

She looked at me with a look: Are you sure? It's not cheap.

Nurse: Come with me.

We settled on the bill as I cleared everything.

Soon she called Dawn to come to the hospital saying that it's a piece of good news.

I thanked her and probably asked her for another favour.

Me: Would I dress up as a male nurse too? So she can't identify me. And perhaps I can convince her to go ahead and pick a good time for the operation.

She was hesitant for a while as she went to discuss with the seniors. Upon hearing what I did, they turned and smiled at me, giving me a good thumbs up sign.

Dawn ran into the office, panicking.

I could finally see her, and I was fully wearing the uniform, with my mouth covered and wearing the cap.

Dawn: Is it about my father? How is he? How is he?

I love seeing her soft side, her feminine side. This was the real her.

The nurse nudged me, making me wake up from my dream.

Nurse: Your dad is able to go for the surgery now. There was a donor who helped with the bills. Here, look at this.

She showed Dawn the bill and Dawn could not believe her eyes. She immediately broke down. Her lips trembling as she could not control her body. She shivered and she tried her best to speak.

Dawn: Who is he? Please tell me....

Nurse: I can't Miss. It's confidential.

I could see her face turn to relief.

I cut in the conversation.

Me: Ahem! I think priority is to get your dad to go for the operation without delay.

Dawn looked at me and nodded weakly.

They set the date for the operation and I walked away.

From the encounter just now, perhaps I can start on the fourth sculpture now. I was eager to sketch out what I saw.

Dawn ran to her dad.

Dawn: Daddy! You can go for the operation! That's good news!

Mary: He did. But I was declined talking to him. He asked about you.

Dawn: What happened after you declined him?

Mary: Not too sure, but I think he took Snow out.

Dawn: Sure thanks.

Mary: Did anything happen?

Dawn: Nope. Nothing. I need to take a few days off mama. My dad is getting the operation.

Mary: It's great child! You managed to get the money?

Dawn: Someone paid for it. And I think it's him.

I took a rest at home. Exhausted but happy.

Now all's that is left is Dawn's contract.

King was the same. His dad had given up on him completely. He showed no sign of giving a damn. He still spent like the old days, using verbal credit. Soon he had made a lot of enemies. And his debt was piling sky high. He borrowed from loan sharks, one after another.

Until the neighbours could not put up with his nonsense. They called the police and they could do nothing.

His dad kept apologising to them but he knew it's going to be soon before they would be asked to leave.

His dad had to work extra hard to foot his son's debts. But soon his body was giving way. He could feel his body growing weaker. He tried to tell his son but King would just ignore him, instead he would ask him for even more money.

King has picked up another habit.

He was getting bolder and bolder.

He liked the kick of attacking woman, and seeing their unexpected expressions.

One after another.

He liked the feeling of triumph.

And then he saw another target.

I spent most of my time visiting the hospital, seeing Dawn's father, being there and lending him a listening ear.

He told me stories about Dawn, where we both laughed. His health was getting better, and now he was living in an A ward.

I knew of the times that Dawn would be here, so I could avoid her. I did not want her to know about me.

Perhaps today was a special one for me and I would like to go to the ktv, I would like to book Dawn for the night.

I said goodbye to Dawn's father as I left.

I was there early as I saw Mary, and asked if I could bring Dawn out.

Surprisingly she agreed instantly. And she appeared happy too.

Weird, I thought.

I was ushered to the room and Dawn came in, wearing a low cut black dress, her hair tied up. She wore no make up and her Kenzo rose perfume smelled really good.

Dawn: Hi.

I practically blanked out, seeing her in real person.

She liked the attention now.

Dawn: How long are you going to sit there and look at me? Whole night?

Her words woke me as I scratched my head.

Me: Sorry. sorry.

Dawn: Any songs you would like to sing?

Me: Er...

Dawn: Let me sing a song for you?

There she sang this song.

She sat closer to me.

I knew I sounded awful but seeing that smile on her face meant so much more.

I could feel my nose heating up.

I swallowed my saliva.

Not now please. I begged myself. Not now.

I pushed Dawn further as I took out my handkerchief.

There was blood again. Now it's becoming more and more frequent.

Dawn: You alright?

I gestured for her to stay where she was as I went to the toilet.

I saw Snow outside the toilet and she was shocked.

My handkerchief was all dyed red.

Now there was really something wrong. Something deadly wrong.

I shouted at her. The people turned their heads, seeing what was happening. Dawn came out from the room. Turned towards my direction.

Snow was taken aback by my actions as she cried.

Dawn stood there.

Because she saw the drips of blood on the floor, leading to where I was standing.

She walked nearer.

My nose was still bleeding.

Dawn: Are you alright? What's wrong?

Me: I'm fine, Dawn. Perhaps could we go out for some fresh air?

She nodded as she held my arms, helping me walk out.

Snow gazed at us. And there was that tinge of jealousy.

We went to the top of Mount Emily.

Seeing the night scene was rejuvenating.

Dawn crossed her arms on mine as she leaned her head towards me.

Dawn: Thanks Max. I really don't know how to thank you.

Me: You don't have to, Dawn. Really.

We kept the silence for an hour, enjoying her company. It felt comfortable to be with her.

The smell of her hair, her feminine character, her soft breasts.

I pictured them in my thoughts and was determined to finish my fourth piece.

Me: Have you seen someone sculpting stones?

Dawn shook her head.

Me: Maybe I can show you how a sculptor works?

She nodded her head excitedly.

Me: Dawn?

Me: Sure. I'll give you a job offer. Would you be my PA?
