Cool Fire kills 26 in illegal bar at Zhongshan, China

Report from The Strais Times (Singapore) dated Monday 26 December 2005 :-

Fire Sweeps Through Bar in China; 26 Dead

By Joe McDonald
Associated Press Writer

BEIJING (AP) -- A fire at an unlicensed bar killed at least 26 people and injured 11 in a Chinese city near Hong Kong, news reports and a local official said Monday.

The fire broke out late Sunday in the bar in Zhongshan, a mainland city that abuts the former Portuguese colony of Macau west of Hong Kong, the official Xinhua News Agency said.

At least 26 people were killed, said an official who answered the phone at the propaganda office of Zhongshan's Communist Party branch. The official refused to give his name.

"This small bar is an illegal business inside a restaurant," the man said. "The bar owner has been detained for investigation."

Police and fire officials in Zhongshan refused to release any information.

Zhongshan is part of the booming Pearl River Delta region around Hong Kong whose factories form the heart of China's export-driven manufacturing industries.

Witnesses quoted by Hong Kong Cable TV said there was an explosion before the bar fire. Police were shown cordoning off the building and nearby roads as debris was cleaned up.

It was the second time in five years that China has suffered a deadly Christmas Day fire.

In 2000, a fire blamed on a welding accident tore through a disco in the central city of Luoyang, killing 309 people who were celebrating the holiday.

A court sentenced 23 people held responsible for the disaster to up to 13 years in prison.

China has suffered a string of such fires in shopping malls, movie theaters and other public places despite repeated official promises to improve safety.

Hello banana

Your foxy bartender should be the one who work on morning shift at bar counter 4 along LHL. Did I guess correctly?

Not sure which end your counter 4 starts from. I went on two separate mornings and saw no foxy bartender on both days and I checked counter 4 from both ends! But, to each his own I suppose!

Taipa Hotel is not even convenient to cheong Macau let alone LHL in Zhuhai!

Perhaps, there's some action in Taipa itself (cos I saw some KTV type outlets) but I suggest not to stay there!

Every counter got a number lah, the "counter 4" I'm talkng about is the one very close to a CD shop. If you sit at this counter, u can enjoy free chinese songs out from the CD music shop. Anyways, that foxy bartender(accordingly to description of bro banana, she's tall, fair, with a aeroplane figure(u should know which part of her body I am refereing to). So I guess she's the one who bro banana talking about. mmm.. the one i saw not bad looking and meet what bro banana's description. think banana not in ZH in CQ. waiting for his verification

Re: Macau or Zhuhai

Just to share a bit of info on macau.

I was travelling to GZ via macau last year and was happened to stay in a cheap hotel called Hotel Central. It was located along the main road, Avenida de Almeida Ribero, close to the main tourist attraction and casino also( as i intended to visit). Wao lau Ye, once i checked in , i feel that my movement was closely monitored by many. First the house keeping Aunty start pestering me to get a "xiao jie" " lai suang yi suang", then my phone keep on ringing. Quite cheap, abt 200rmb ST, but dun know what u get ( u can reject but they will pester u). Got a average PRC, service wise, quite ok.

Also, if u walk toward the other end of the main road ( away from casino dir), u will find one small hotel called "Fu cheng jiu dian" , i passed by and peek through the glass and saw many chio PRC inside, some looks quite young. suspect ST shld be same as above , but i never confirmed. Maybe bro here knows.

Wah sucked into an aka 'time-sharing' scheme and the only hotel offered to me for my membership is a hetel in Taipa for Macau area. That is why i want to find out if staying there is a good idea.

I am surprised to see the map of macau. It is like 3 islands, all of which linked up by causeways between the islands.
The macau airport is on the Taipa island. But why is Taipa seemed such a 'ulu' place?!?!

The major business of Macu centres around the casinos and most of them are in the main island and not Taipa where the "resorts" are located and the golf course also.

Solution - sell out your time-share (week/month) to others who are looking for family resort holiday and book yourself into the main action location or, pay the price of shuttling up and down Taipa!

Shit... I prefer bonks to golf when I am planning for overseas trip on my own... This Taipa island sounds shitty to me if my intention is for the convenience of picking different SYTs from a selection to sample in a day.

I checked out if there are stays avail in ZH; there is none. Give up on this membership, shit!!! U need stays there at Taipa ? Just let me know, hehehe

Re: Macau or Zhuhai

Hi Bro banana or any regular ZH Chongers,
I am planning to visit ZH alone for the first time during the week of 15-18 Jan. What is your advice on the conditions there;

1. Will there be very little choice of SYT available due to CNY? What is the weather conditions too? Is it rainy like cats and dogs?
3. Are the business, both commercial (shops, suanas, etc) and WL slow down due to CNY?

Appreciate your advice. Thanks Bros. Cheers.
