For the physical distance lever its to set the zoom setting while you are in vr mode and allows you to in a way set the zoom setting physically and lock it before watching vr

As for the software distance setting that can be adjusted via the setting panel while in vr mode and be set there via the software

The purpose of the distance vr setting is basically to make you feel whether you want to be part of the action or a spectator simply by moving the distance set in vr mode
