Former PAP MP Dr Dixie Tan dies aged 78

Former People's Action Party Member of Parliament, Dr Dixie Tan, has died. The former cardiologist was 78.

SINGAPORE: Former People's Action Party Member of Parliament, Dr Dixie Tan, has died. The former cardiologist was 78.

A relative told Channel NewsAsia she died at Singapore General Hospital just after midnight on Wednesday, after battling brain cancer for about two months.

Dr Tan became an MP in 1984, after she was returned unopposed on Nomination Day during the General Election.

That made her the first woman Member of Parliament in 14 years, and she represented the constituency of Ulu Pandan until 1991.

She is survived by her husband, retired cardio-thoracic surgeon Dr Tan Ngoh Chuan, 83; son, Russel Tan, 54; and daughters, Dr Grace Tan, 50, and Dr Jacinta Tan, 49.

Her wake will be held at the Mount Vernon Sanctuary on Friday and Saturday, with a service between 8 and 9 pm on both days.

A funeral service will be held on Sunday, at the Paya Lebar Methodist Church, starting at 3:30pm.
