SINGAPORE: Mr Gerard Ee will step down as chairman of the Public Transport Council (PTC), a position he has held since 2005.

In his place, Mr Richard Magnus will serve as chairman with 14 other members of the PTC, for the next term from May 1 to April 30, 2016.

Together with Mr Ee, a total of six members of the PTC will step down at the end of the current term, and there will be five new appointees.

Mr Magnus has served on the council since February 2012.

In a statement announcing the appointments made by Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew, the Ministry of Transport voiced its appreciation to Mr Ee for his service to the PTC. It also thanked outgoing members for their contributions.

The Transport Ministry added that Mr Ee has steered the PTC in achieving a "delicate balance of the needs of the commuting public" and ensuring that public transport operators stay viable.

It said that under his watch, bus and train fares have "remained affordable despite the rising cost of living".

The statement added that Mr Ee was also instrumental in many initiatives undertaken by the PTC, including the introduction of Quality of Service standards to drive improvements in basic bus services; the distance-based fare structure, and also the promotion of graciousness on public transport.

Mr Magnus was a Senior District Judge with the Singapore Legal Service. He is currently the chairman of the Casino Regulatory Authority, and recently led the Fare Review Mechanism Committee (FRMC) which undertook a review of the public transport fare review mechanism and fare concessionary framework.

The recommendations of the FRMC were accepted by the government in November 2013 and will be implemented progressively in 2014.
