Seeking Advice - please recommend a doctor/clinic

Dear bros,

I am planning to get married and hope to call it a day on cheonging and put this past behind me.

I have had many sexual encounters from one night stands and short term flings. In between these, occasionally l have also sought professional services... happy ending "massages" or fish tank for relief. All these years l have always thought l was careful and always used the condom. The main risk factor l thought was BBBJ as l could not resist the temptation to CIM.

I do not have any itchiness, pus, smell ... pain when peeing...discomfort....etc ie.symptoms of STD. So l never thought it necessary to have myself tested or checked.

When l met my girlfriend and decided that she was the one, l tapered my cheonging activities and eventually stopped. She became my only sex partner. And we had unprotected sex. After we started having sex, she occasionally started hvg discharges, itch, discomfort in her vaginal area. Before that she was fine., she was a virgin ... so l don't suspect anything about her. This was on and off for about 2 years.. so we didn't give it much attention. Each time she sees a GP, antibiotics are prescribed and it clears... but it always comes back...

When we started talking seriously of marriage, she decided to go to the gynae for a check up. It turns out she has Candida Vaginitis, a Yeast Infection.

The problem is... it means l have also been infected... each time she recovers from a bout of yeast infection... l re-infect her again... Other than a health issue, this is also putting a strain on our relationship. And now she has trust issues because she is certain l got the bacteria from my previous cheonging.

So bros,...

Need advice for the following,

1. How do l cure myself of this yeast infection? I don't even have any symptoms
2. Where can l go to check myself for this?
3. In addition, l want to give myself a thorough test for other STDs to assure myself a clean bill of health before l even tbink about having children. Any private clinics to recommend? I would like one that gives me a statement or print out of the result so that l can show it to my girlfriend to assure her too.

Btw, l understand that the DSC clinic in Kelantan Lane only send sms which does not explicitly state the tests done... so l am not so keen.

Sorry for long post... would appreciate any advice. Thank you in advance

Re: Seeking Advice - please recommend a doctor/clinic

Hi bro - you may go to any private GP clinic. Had a frank talks with the doctor.
He will advice you on all matters regarding your needs. Follow on - the doctors will take your sample blood and sent to the lab for test - it takes about 3 to 5 days for the result to come back to you.

Any infections detected - the doctors will prescribe the medicine or further refer you to specialist for treatment. Personally - I went thru these procedure.

It's good you that you had come to terms to seek treatment for the your future goods. Most important - you need to be frank with the doctors who attend to you - he will do the necessary test requirement.

Good luck and all the best!

Re: Seeking Advice - please recommend a doctor/clinic

You just need to chill bro.

It is not uncommon for women to get recurrent urinary tract infection especially when they have sex frequently. The problem is that if they require antibiotics for treatment of the urinary tract infection (which is often caused by bacteria) it may also clear up normal bacteria in her vagina that usually prevents other infection from setting in (infection like yeast for example).

Yeast can exist in the vagina naturally, but it doesn't become a full blown infection unless something happens to wipe out all the normal bacteria there. Just reassure your girlfriend, and see a GP with her together.

Candida Vaginitis is not necessarily a sexually transmitted disease as someone who has never had sex can end up with this infection.

This is because the yeast is already present in the mouth, the gut and the vagina.

However, when excessive yeast growth occurs, the symptoms that you described above develop. In a healthy vagina, the good bacteria present prevents infectons. However, excessive douching or a course of antibiotics can disturb the delicate balance by killing the good bacteria which protects the mucous membranes.

Candida Vaginitis is not caused by a bacteria and the gynae should have explained to your girlfriend that it is not an STD.

If your girlfriend is being prescribed antibiotics for a fungal infection, your GP is a quack. Fungal infections require anti fungal medication. Antibiotics only works for bacterial infections.

Treatment in men is pretty straightforward. For men, oral or local treatments can be used. Eg Diflucan is a capsule containing 150mg of the antifungal drug fluconazole.

Another line of treatment available to men is a class of antifungal known as imidazole.

Your girl should be taking the same medication or suppositories.

Both of you should see a proper doctor who has experience in this field. In my opinion, both of you are receiving very poor medical advice based upon your description of what has transpired thus far.

Yes, I agree. My girlfriend used to be given a course of antibiotics followed by probiotics. But there is always recurrence. It also sometimes acts up when she drinks too much red wine. This time she is being advised by a gynae, and she was given some suppositories. I hope her problem can be solved once and for all.

On my part, can I buy the medication Diflucan, Fluconazole or Imidazole in a pharmacy over the counter or do I need a doctor to prescribe it. If I need a doctor to prescribe it, can I go to a regular GP or do I need to go to a specialised clinic like Shim or Dr Tan's?

Thank you again.

I suggest you see a doctor rather than self medicate as a proper diagnosis needs to be performed. Go to Dr Tan or any other GP that has experience in this field of medicine. Many GPs are ignorant. I have come across GPs who have not progressed beyond their med school text books when it comes to STDs.

Many years ago, a wife of one of my friends went to see a GP because she would bleed periodically after intercourse. The GP did nothing more than a visual inspection and told her everything was fine and that it was probably her mid month discharge.

I told him that it did not sound right and asked him to take his wife to a qualified specialist. It turned out to be dysplasia of the cervix which means the cells are pre cancerous as a result of an HPV infection. The infection is visible only when the suspected area is painted with a 5% acetic acid solution. The GP she first went to was obviously unaware of this simple diagnostic tool.

Laser therapy cured the problem with no lasting effects because it was caught early. Had the GP's diagnosis been taken at face value, she could well have died of cervical cancer.

Re: Seeking Advice - please recommend a doctor/clinic

Fungal infection of the vagina is a very common thing and not necessarily sexually related. There is always fungus and bacteria living in the vagina. This is called normal vaginal flora and is healthy. Sometimes, something (usually lifestyle related) disturbs this delicate balance in the vagina (known as the vaginal micro-environment). It could be douching, using strong soap, taking antibiotics, diet related (like red wine in the case of your GF) etc etc. When this balance is affected, either the fungus will overgrow (leading to fungal vaginitis) or bacteria will over grow (leading to bacterial vaginitis). Most doctors will just treat with an antibiotic or antifungal and more or less brush the issue aside.

I say it is not necessarily sexually transmitted for the above reasons but it could also be sexually related in the following ways: First, sexual intercourse also disturbs the vaginal micro-environment. Semen is more alkaline and when it changes the pH of the vagina, can cause either the fungus or bacteria to overgrow. Secondly, men can have a fungal infection too and the majority of them will not have any symptoms. When a woman with a regular male partner has recurrent vaginal fungal infections, I always advise treating the male partner as well as instituting lifestyle change. Third and last, you may have a co-infection with another STD like Ureaplasma that you have passed to her and is contributing to the issue.

Hope that gives you a better idea of the issues involved.

The doctor has spoken and he couldn't have put it any better.

The thread starter should go to a knowledgeable doctor with his girlfriend so they can both be diagnosed and treated simultaneously.
