Van plunges down cliff in North Canterbury

 Van plunges down cliff in North Canterbury 12:42 PM Saturday Feb 7, 2015  A rented white Hyundai mini-van carrying six occupants left Greta Road (State Highway One) and plunged down a 40 to 50m bank. Photo / Supplied by $$$$$$$ Rescue One person is dead and five are injured following a mini-van's plunge down a North Canterbury bank this morning. A rented white Hyundai mini-van carrying six occupants left Greta Road (State Highway One) and plunged down a 40 to 50m bank, Inspector Peter Hegarty of the southern police communication centre said. One of the vehicle's occupants was confirmed deceased at the scene, four were flown to Christchurch hospital by helicopter with serious and moderate injuries and one was taken to ambulance with minor/moderate injuries. The crash happened approximately 1km south of the Hurunui River bridge shortly before 10.22am this morning. Police were called at 10:25am, Mr Hegarty said. The death has been referred to the Coroner who will determine cause of death. Canterbury Police are appealing for anyone who saw the white min-van on SH1 prior to the crash or may have witnessed the mini-van leave the road to contact them on 03 363 7400 option 5.
