Thumbs up The Absence of Moral Authority Leads to Punishments of Thoughts.

An honorable member of the Coffee Shop Has Just Posted the Following:

Governments that are founded on the principle of genuine democracy that includes universal suffrage govern by virtue of the mandate of their peoples. Now, problems arise when you don’t have a genuine democracy such as what you have in Singapore. Deprived of a choice, democracy is not a democracy. The stifling of free expression cannot be justified in a democracy. In fact, free expression of thoughts and opinions must form part of the mechanism of a democratic state. Consequently, when you do not have a genuine democracy in place and when the government is forced to stifle free expression, you are implying, directly and indirectly, that the government cannot be held accountable by its people as it tolerates no queries by its people. This puts such government in a position that is not liable for its own actions. A government that is immune to criticism and one which is above the law.

But one must start asking questions why would a government put in so much effort to stifle free expression and make themselves unaccountable to its own people. Any thinking person would know the answer. The stifling of free expression is put in place because such government has no moral authority to govern in the first place. For such government, you can expect abuse of power and law to occur on day-to-day basis. Free expression would expose such government of their corrupt practice and eventually trigger their downfall. This is the basis of any dictatorial regime. Such rule is not governed by common sense for the benefit of the people. The whole system is installed merely to protect and benefit a small group of people at the expense of the greater good. That is why such a government would not stand to scrutiny. That is why free expression is considered an existential threat. In fact, the stifling of free expression inevitably leads to the so called punishment of thoughts. For ideas are the most dangerous thing in this world and the only thing more dangerous than ideas is a thinking person.

For inferior ideas to thrive it must suppress all other superior ideas. For a self-serving system to last, it must punish any thoughts that would expose it. This is what’s happening with Amos Yee and Roy Ngerng. They are being punished for expressing their thoughts. In a genuine democracy, what Amos Yee and Roy Ngerng did would not cause so much a stir because there’s transparency. In a banana republic such as Singapore those expressions are considered an existential threat simply because the system is one which is based on a lie. One which will not stand to scrutiny. If people start asking questions, such a system will simply not survive. The drastic measures taken against these two people are simply a fear reaction by the government in Singapore lest more people would follow suit and start asking pertinent questions.
