Putangina, buwisit ako diyan,' the Philippine President says about US Ambassador Philip Goldberg Pia Ranada @piaranada Published 12:11 AM, August 06, 2016 Updated 7:24 AM, August 06, 2016 CIVIL MOMENT. President Rodrigo Duterte meets US Ambassador Philip Goldberg in Malacañang Palace on July 19, 2016. Photo by Presidential Photographers Division CAPIZ, Philippines – The notoriously frank President Rodrigo Duterte had something to say about United States Ambassador Philip Goldberg on Friday, August 5. Narrating the recent meeting he had with US Secretary of State John Kerry, Duterte transitioned into telling his audience of soldiers in Camp Lapu-Lapu in Cebu City about his dislike for Goldberg. "Kausap namin si Kerry. Okay naman siya kasi nag-away kami ng ambassador niya, 'yung ambassador, 'yung bakla. Putangina buwisit ako diyan," said a visibly irritated Duterte. (We were talking to Kerry. He's okay but I had an argument with their ambassador, that homosexual. Son of bitch, he really annoys me.) The Philippine president has obviously not gotten over Goldberg's reaction to his controverial rape remark that was among the lowest points of his 2016 presidential campaign. "Makikisali doon sa eleksyon eh (Interfering in elections), giving statements here and there. You’re not supposed to do that," said Duterte. In a television interview amidst national uproar about Duterte's remark, Goldberg had said, “statements by anyone, anywhere that either degrade women or trivialize issues so serious as rape or murder are not ones that we condone.” A vexed Duterte slammed Goldberg for interfering in the national elections, even advising him to "shut up." Duterte then continued with his narration of his meeting with Kerry. By the end of the courtesy call, Kerry had promised to give the Philippine government $32 million for law enforcement. Duterte joked that it seems insulting Americans is one way to get money from them. "Iniwanan pa kami ni si Delfin [Lorenzana] ng $[32] million. Okay ito ah. Bastusin natin ulit para mag-areglo itong buwang na ito. Pera pala ito, pera-pera lang," said a chuckling Duterte. (He left me and Delfin Lorenzana with $32 million. This is great. Let's insult them again so these fools try to make amends again. They're just about money.) While Duterte referred to Goldberg as a "bakla" as if to insult him, this is not the first time he used the term in a derogatory way. During the 2016 campaign season, Duterte used the term "bayot" which also means "gay" in Bisaya to denote weakness in critics who don't believe he can suppress crime and drugs in 3 to 6 months. (READ: 'Bayot, bakla' don't mean 'weak,' transgender bet tells Duterte) Duterte's statement comes more than a week after Kerry paid him a courtesy call in Malacañang, becoming his most VIP guest so far. The week before Kerry's visit, Goldberg himself met with Duterte to discuss the recent Hague ruling on the West Philippine Sea (South China Sea). – Rappler.com HOW DOES THIS STORY MAKE YOU FEEL? 13% Happy 3% Sad 57% Angry 5% Don't Care 1% Inspired 1% Afraid 8% Amused 12% Annoyed THIS STORY MAKES PEOPLE ANGRY Show 77 Comments FROM AROUND THE WEB E-commerce Training, Strategies and Tips The Death Of Retail In Singapore? www.ubs.com Brexit fallout: France is in and Germany out - UBS looks at the impact NICORETTE® Singapore Quit smoking myths debunked CNET Singapore Becomes First Southeast Asia Company to Support Samsung Pay Recommended by PHILIPPINES Philip Goldberg next US envoy to PH Goldberg will replace US Ambassador to the Philippines Harry K. US Assistant Secretary of State for Intelligence and Research Philip Goldberg testifies before a full committee hearing on "Current and Projected National Security Threats to the United States"at the Hart Senate Office Building in Washington, DC, on March 12, 2013. AFP PHOTO/Jewel Samad MANILA, Philippines - US President Barack Obama has nominated Philip S. Goldberg as the next Ambassador to the Philippines, the White House said Tuesday, July 30 (US time). The 57-year-old Goldberg was among 8 nominations made by Obama Tuesday for key government posts. Of the 8, at least 7 were for diplomatic posts. He will replace Harry K. Thomas, who has been Washington's envoy to Manila since April 2010. Goldberg is "a career member of the Senior Foreign Service, Class of Career-Minister, is Assistant Secretary for Intelligence and Research at the Department of State, a position he has held since 2010," the White House said. Previously, he served as US Ambassador to Bolivia (2006-2008), and was Chief of Mission in Pristina, Kosovo (2005-2006). He was also Charge d'Affaires and Deputy Chief of Mission at the US embassy in Santiago, Chile (2001-2004), and Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary for Legislative Affairs (2001). He also served as Special Assistant and then Executive Assistant to the Deputy Secretary of State (1996-2000) and Bosnia Desk Officer (1994-1996). Other postings brought him to the US embassies in Bogota, Colombia, and Pretoria, South Africa. Prior to working at the US State Department, he was a Liaison Officer for the City of New York for the United Nations, the White House said. Back in 2008, Goldberg and officials of the US Drug Enforcement Administration were expelled by Bolivian President Evo Morales after accusing them of taking part in a right-wing conspiracy against him. Washington reciprocated by kicking out the Bolivian ambassador to Washington. In 2009, he was also the envoy in charge with implementing the North Korean sanctions imposed by the United Nations. Other nominees Aside from Goldberg, Obama nominated the following: Michael L. Connor – Deputy Secretary, Department of the Interior Robert Blake – Ambassador to the Republic of Indonesia, Department of State Thomas Frederick Daughton – Ambassador to the Republic of Namibia, Department of State John L. Estrada – Ambassador to the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, Department of State Michael Stephen Hoza – Ambassador to the Republic of Cameroon, Department of State Noah Bryson Mamet – Ambassador to the Argentine Republic, Department of State Eunice S. Reddick – Ambassador to the Republic of Niger, Department of State "I am grateful that these impressive individuals have chosen to dedicate their talents to serving the American people at this important time for our country. I look forward to working with them in the months and years ahead," Obama said, as quoted by the White House. The US Senate has to confirm their appointments. - With reports from the Agence France-Presse/Rappler.com HOW DOES THIS STORY MAKE YOU FEEL?
