SINGAPORE - A 67-year-old woman was charged on Thursday (June 1) with 169 counts of cheating.

According to at least two of the charges, Tan Hwee Ngo allegedly duped Mr Tan Soy Kiang into believing that payments were needed for Mr Lee Kuan Yew.

However, court papers did not mention if Tan Hwee Ngo was referring to the country's late former prime minister.

Mr Tan, 72, is a petrol station pump attendant and single.

Tan Hwee Ngo allegedly committed the offences from 1999 and the court heard that her cases involved about $200,000 in all.

In June that year, she is accused of dishonestly inducing Mr Tan Soy Kiang into withdrawing $53,161.64 from his Central Provident Fund Savings account by saying payments were needed for Mr Lee.

By using the same reason, Tan Hwee Ngo allegedly duped Mr Tan Soy Kiang into giving $500 in cash to a woman known as Ms Boo Sok Hiang in January 2000.

Court papers did not mention the nature of their relationship.

Dressed in a red top with slacks, the petite Tan Hwee Ngo appeared calm as she stood in the dock on Thursday.

She is represented by lawyer Mathew Kurian and was offered a bail of $20,000.

She will be back in court on June 22.

If convicted of cheating, Tan Hwee Ngo can be jailed for up to seven years and fined.
